Derek R. Peterson, professor of history and Afroamerican and African studies, LSA, has been selected as winner of the 2013 Martin A. Klein Prize in African History for his book “Ethnic Patriotism and the East Africa Revival: A History of Dissent, c. 1935-1972.” The American Historical Association Klein Prize recognizes the most distinguished work of scholarship on African history published in English during the previous calendar year.

Mariko Okada, the Center for Japanese Studies 2012-13 Toyota Professor in Residence and 2013-14 Visiting Scholar, has been selected to receive the 2013 Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities. The prize is in the literary and art criticism category for her book “The Birth of Kyomai (Kyoto Dance): Inoue-ryu Dance in Nineteenth-Century Kyoto, Japan.”

Beatrice J. Kalisch, Shirley Titus Distinguished Professor of Nursing and director of innovation and evaluation, School of Nursing, has been chosen as the 2013–14 Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. The IOM Scholars-in-Residence program provides a yearlong leadership opportunity in healthcare policy development at the national level.
