Award

Dr. Martin Myers Jr., the Marilyn H. Vincent Professor of Diabetes Research and associate professor of internal medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes, and associate professor in Molecular & Integrative Physiology, recently was awarded the 2009 Lilly Scientific Achievement Award from the Obesity Society for his research into the hormone leptin and the role it plays in obesity. The award recognizes excellence in an established research career for researchers who are within 15 years of receiving their terminal degree.

Selected

Two School of Dentistry faculty members have been selected to participate in the American Dental Education Association’s Leadership Institute. Dr. Russell Taichman, professor of dentistry and director of the Scholars Program in Dental Leadership, and Dr. Domenica “Nikki” Sweier, clinical assistant professor, Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences & Endodontics, School of Dentistry, will join 24 of the nation’s most promising dental educators, faculty and administrators in the yearlong program, which begins with an orientation session this month in Washington, D.C.

Elected

Brian Robson, business analyst in the Student Administration-Financial Aid and Students Financial Group, was elected to serve a one-year term in the student financials section of the Higher Education User Group (HEUG). The HEUG is an international organization consisting of universities using application software from the Oracle Corporation. Oracle currently is the software behind U-M’s Pathways Financials, Physical Resources, Student Administration and Human Resources Management systems.

Dr. Ariel Barkan, professor of internal medicine and professor of neurosurgery, Medical School, and director of the fellowship program, Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes, has been elected to a four-year term on the board of directors of the Pituitary Society. This is the international organization’s first election by its membership; previously, board members were appointed.
