Award
Professor Robert Griess Jr. has received the 2010 American Mathematical Society Leroy P. Steele Prize for a Seminal Contribution to Research. Presented annually by the AMS, the Steele Prize is one of the highest distinctions in mathematics. Griess was honored for his construction of the “Monster” sporadic finite simple group, which he first announced in a 1981 paper in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences U.S.A.
