The 2013-14 edition of the U-M “Annual Security Report and Annual Fire Safety Report” now is available, and it includes crime statistics for the 2012 calendar year that appear to reflect new policies encouraging the reporting of sexual misconduct.
Thirty-four sexual assaults were reported in 2012, 17 to police and 17 to non-police, such as the Office of Student Conflict Resolution or University Housing staff. This compares with 14 — eight to police and six to non-police — in 2011.
The U-M Police Department says the increase is indicative of a sexual assault policy — in effect as an interim policy since August 2011 and formally implemented this fall — that put in place protocols to encourage additional reporting of sexual misconduct.
Statistical highlights of the report in other categories show:
• Burglary reports to UMPD increased from 25 in 2011 to 37 in 2012.
• Alcohol arrests by UMPD decreased from 314 to 263. However, disciplinary referrals handled by staff increased from 855 to 941.
• Drug arrests by UMPD increased from 102 to 134, while disciplinary referrals remained comparable.
The annual document is a resource for issues of campus safety, including emergency services, safety tips, university policies and state laws, and additional support services. Additionally, it contains the Annual Fire Safety Report regarding fire safety and fire statistics in on-campus housing.
