Eric Bronson, senior photographer with Michigan Photography, recently placed four photos in the 2013 University Photographers’ Association of America annual print contest and was named UPAA Photographer of the Year. The contest drew entries from more than 100 university photographers. This is fourth time in seven years a Michigan Photography staff member has taken the top award. All-American, took first place in Sports Features and his photo of Michigan wide receiver Jeremy Gallon making a reception against Iowa took fourth place in Sports Action. A photo taken during the annual Mud Bowl took second in the News category. A shot of Tulga Ersal, assistant research scientist in mechanical engineering, placed third in Science and Research. Bronson was the only entrant to win four individual awards.
Dr. Scott Tomlins, assistant professor of pathology and urology at the Medical School, is the winner of the inaugural Martin and Rose Wachtel Cancer Research Award, presented by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Science Translational Medicine. It honors an early career investigator who has performed outstanding work in cancer research. Tomlins will receive $25,000 and present a lecture based on his research.
Barbara Furin Sloat, professor emerita, biology, and lecturer I in the Residential College, LSA, was recently recognized for her work by alma mater Denison University with an alumni citation, the highest honor bestowed upon a graduate or friend of the college. She also is a cell biologist and founding director of U-M’s Women in Science and Engineering Program, designed to increase the number of females pursing degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics while fostering their future success, a model program nationwide.

Homer A. Neal, the Samuel A. Goudsmit Distinguished Professor of Physics, director of the U-M-ATLAS Project, interim president emeritus, and vice president emeritus for research at U-M has been elected vice president of the American Physical Society. Following the society’s succession structure, he will become president in 2015. Neal’s physics research group at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, played a key role in the recent discovery of the Higgs boson.
Gurpreet Rana, global health coordinator at the Taubman Health Sciences Library, has received the 2013 Estelle Brodman Award for the Academic Medical Librarian of the Year. The award recognizes an academic medical librarian at the midcareer level who demonstrates significant achievement, continuing excellence, and leadership potential.
Nancy J. Allee, deputy director of the Taubman Health Sciences Library, has been selected to receive the Medical Library Association (MLA) President’s Award in recognition of her valuable and sustained contributions on the MLA Futures Task Force, as a mentor in the MLA Rising Star program, and as co-chair of the National Program Committee for MLA ’14.
The Taubman Health Sciences Library team that developed the free, open source Plain Language Medical App was awarded the Thomson Reuters/Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award. It recognizes outstanding contributions in the application of technology or the facilitation of the delivery of health sciences information or to the science of information.
