Jill Abramson, the first woman to be named executive editor of The New York Times in the paper’s 160-year history, will present the 2013 Center for the Education of Women (CEW) Mullin Welch Lecture. It is scheduled for 4:30-6 p.m. March 19 in the Kahn Auditorium in the Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB). A reception in the BSRB atrium will follow the program.
Abramson is a New York City native who received her Bachelor of Arts in history and literature from Harvard University in 1976. She worked in several senior reporting and investigative roles for The Wall Street Journal before becoming chief of The New York Times Washington bureau. She served as the Times’ managing editor before assuming her current post as executive editor.
At the event, CEW will also present the second annual Carol Hollenshead Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity and Social Change. Named for CEW’s former long-time director, the award recognizes a faculty member, staff member or student whose sustained efforts have resulted in greater equity in the university community or beyond.
The Mullin Welch Speaker Series was established in 1989 by Frances Daseler and Marjorie Jackson in memory of their sister Elizabeth Charlotte Mullin Welch. The series celebrates individuals who exemplify her characteristics of creativity, strength of character and expansive vision.
