Much scientific research is published, but the best is represented on the front covers of journals. For the last five years the U-M Library, partner to researchers across campus, has celebrated U-M authors and scientists by displaying their framed and mounted journal covers in the Shapiro Science Library.
This year, 18 new covers are the focus of the Sixth Annual Science Covers Celebration. It is from 4-6 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Shien-Ming Wu Current Periodicals Room on the third floor of the Shapiro Science Library. Paul N. Courant, university librarian and dean of libraries, and Elaine Westbrooks, associate university librarian for research, will speak at 4:15 p.m.
Nicolai Lehnert, associate professor of chemistry and biophysics, LSA, claimed two science covers this year: the March 2012 issue of Dalton Transactions and the May 2012 issue of Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry. He cited the library’s contribution, saying, “Scientific work without a library is simply impossible.”
Mark Hunter, the Henry A. Gleason Collegiate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, School of Natural Resources and Environment; and professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, LSA, is another honoree. His article appeared on the cover of the May 2012 issue of Restoration Ecology. Hunter also cited the library’s contribution: “It’s essential for my research and I use it nearly every day.”
