Our Miss Sheldon

Through letters and journals, Mary Sheldon chronicled the highs and lows of being one of the first women students at the university. She helped form the first club for women students, resolved to become a scientist, and celebrated her new life of deep thinking and exploration. She did all this in an era when coeducation was deemed a “dangerous experiment” with the potential to weaken men and turn women into “monstrosities.” (heritage.umich.edu/story/our-miss-sheldon/)
 

Beginning this week and running through spring, The Record’s “Old School” feature will highlight the stories and images that are being presented on the new U-M Heritage Project website. That site, heritage.umich.edu, celebrates the university’s history and triumphs, in preparation for the U-M bicentennial in 2017.
