“Places for the Spirit — Traditional African American Gardens” is an exhibition of black and white photographs of African-American gardens taken by artist Vaughn Sills. The exhibit will take place Jan. 18 through March 10 at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. In the spirit of outsider and folk art traditions and the roots of blues music, these gardens capture a unique aesthetic and cultural significance and reveal the presence of the divine in everyday life and the cycles of the natural world. Gardens from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina are represented along with their creators.
