Democrats Mark Bernstein and Shauna Ryder Diggs have been elected to fill two eight-year terms on the Board of Regents.
According to unofficial figures last week, Bernstein received 2,240,375 votes and Diggs received 1,984,941. The results were complete statewide except for three precincts in Genesee County that had not yet been reported.
Meanwhile, Bridget Mary McCormack, clinical professor of law, associate dean for clinical affairs at the Law School, and co-director of the Michigan Innocence Clinic, was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court. McCormack was the top vote getter — with 1,536,890 — in the race for two eight-year terms on the high court.
Bernstein and Diggs will succeed Regents Olivia P. Maynard of Goodrich and S. Martin Taylor of Grosse Pointe Farms, both Democrats who did not seek re-election. The newly elected regents will take office Jan. 1, 2013.
Bernstein of Ann Arbor is president of The Sam Bernstein Law Firm, a leading plaintiff’s trial firm based in Michigan. He earned Bachelor of Arts, Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctorate degrees from U-M. He is the longest serving member of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission.
Diggs of Detroit is a dermatologist in solo private practice at Cosmedic Dermatology. She is a graduate of the U-M Inteflex Program with its combined seven-year medical school and undergraduate education. She also completed her medical internship and residency at U-M.
