The Men’s Glee Club focuses on “Music of the Americas” in its 153rd Annual Fall Hill Concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 17 in Hill Auditorium.
Conductor Eugene Rogers, associate director of choirs and assistant professor of music in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, says this fall the Glee Club is performing music from throughout the Americas. They are exploring musical styles including Mexican/Peruvian baroque, jazz and African-American spirituals, in addition to performing the music of some of prominent American and Brazilian composers.
“While looking back on such great musical styles and composers, we also are excited about looking forward with new arrangements and adaptations by such musicians as Jed Scott, who arranged a couple of jazz numbers for us, and Stacey Gibbs, who arranged a new spiritual,” Rogers says. The club’s season will culminate in a tour of South Carolina, Southern and Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York and Boston.
Founded in 1859, the Men’s Glee Club is one of the oldest collegiate choruses in the United States and the oldest continually run student organization on the Michigan campus. The graduate and undergraduate members of the Glee Club, chosen by audition at the beginning of both the fall and winter terms, represent a spectrum of majors. Its student officers are responsible for the management of all nonmusical Glee Club operations.
