No updates regarding groping incidents reported in September
Three students had reported to university police in early September that they had been groped or inappropriately touched by unknown males. These incidents were reported in the Sept. 17 University Record.
The Department of Public Safety has not received additional information regarding these incidents nor any new incidents. The investigations have been closed for lack of leads.
Patient threatens UMHS staff member
A patient in the University Hospital Emergency Department on Sept. 13 has been charged with simple assault of a nurse. The 48-year-old Ann Arbor resident reportedly was orally abusive to two nurses before threatening to spray one with pepper spray. The nurse was not injured. After the subject was cleared for discharge, she was arrested and taken to jail on an outstanding warrant from another agency.
Two trash cans burned on Hoover Street
A DPS officer found a trash can near Elbel Field on fire around 3:30 a.m. Sept. 16. While he was putting out the flames with a fire extinguisher, a taxi driver alerted him that a second trash can at the corner of Hoover and Green streets also was on fire. The witness had reported the fire to 911, and the Ann Arbor Fire Department soon arrived to extinguish the second fire. Officers were unable to locate anyone in the area who may have set the fires. Damage was contained to the trash receptacles and contents.
U-M bus taken by former employee
A former employee was charged with stealing a U-M bus from the Kipke bus garage on Sept. 21. On Oct. 4, the 23-year-old Romulus man pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of receiving and concealing stolen property.
Around 3:45 a.m. Sept. 21, a DPS officer had conducted a traffic stop on South State Street of a speeding vehicle. The driver explained to the officer that he was a U-M bus driver who just had completed his night shift. As he left work, he observed a bus leaving the parking area. He knew no buses should be out at that hour and proceeded to follow the bus. The police officer terminated the traffic stop and drove off in pursuit of the missing bus. The officer located the bus on I-94 near Ypsilanti, conducted a traffic stop and arrested the man without further incident.
