U-M is ranked as the world’s 20th top institution according to the Times Higher Education.
The annual list ranks the top 400 universities and is based on 13 performance indicators separated into five categories: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.
The London-based higher education magazine worked with Thomson Reuters to produce “World University Rankings 2012-2013.”
U-M ranked No. 18 in the 2011 survey.
Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education Rankings noted that it has been a tough year for many Western institutions in the world rankings as competitors across Asia benefit from substantial funding and focused political commitment to building world-class universities. “For any U.S. institution, just standing still is a real challenge.”
Baty also added, “The top 200 list represents just 1 percent of the world’s higher education institutions — so being towards the very top of that group is an exceptional achievement.”
The ranking is one of two released annually by Times Higher Education. Earlier this year, U-M was ranked 12th in the organization’s annual Reputation Rankings, which are based on results from an invitation-only survey of scholars from around the world.
