Provost Phil Hanlon has named a search committee for the next university librarian.
Gus Evrard, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, professor of physics, professor of astronomy and associate chair, Department of Physics, LSA, will chair the committee, which is charged with recommending candidates to replace Paul Courant, who is leaving his post as university librarian and dean of libraries Aug. 31, 2013. The committee will present candidates by the end of Winter Term 2013.
The committee includes:

• Tonique Brown, undergraduate.
• Derek Collins, professor of Greek and Latin, associate dean, humanities, LSA.

• Devan Donaldson, graduate student research assistant, School of Information.
• Karen Downing, librarian, Library Research, University Library.
• Monika Dressler, senior manager, Instructional Services, LSA.
• Barry Fishman, associate professor of education, School of Education; associate professor of information, School of Information.
• Kathleen Folger, electronic resources officer, University Library.
• Jacob Glenn, associate librarian, Science Libraries, University Library.
• J. Kevin Graffagnino, director, Clements Library; adjunct professor of history, LSA.
• George Hoffmann, associate professor of French, LSA.
• Jeffrey MacKie-Mason, dean, Arthur W. Burks Collegiate Professor of Information and Computer Science, and professor of information, School of Information; professor of economics, LSA; professor of public policy, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

In an email to faculty and staff at the library, Hanlon praised Courant for recognizing early the transformative impact of making library collections available digitally.
“With Paul’s guidance, the library has become an international leader in areas beyond digitization. His wide-ranging expertise — two of his several appointments are in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the Department of Economics — has positioned the library to engage some of the most pressing issues in academia today, among them the impact of current copyright law on research, scholarship, and learning; the future of scholarly communication; and the integration of technology into teaching and learning.
“As a result of this engagement Paul established programs and protocols that open access to as much of the library’s collection as possible; extended the compass of the library’s innovative publishing operations; and presided over the merging into the library of the university’s Digital Media Commons, a rich multimedia facility and development center for new collaboration and learning technologies.”
