The following items were approved by the Board of Regents at its Sept. 20 meeting.
Regents authorize sale of property
The Board of Regents authorized the sale of the university-owned house at 1019 Ferdon Road in Ann Arbor. The property was listed at $529,000. A purchase price has been set at $530,000 and the sale will close in October. The net proceeds of the sale will benefit the university’s endowment.
Infrastructure work planned at Chemistry
Two chillers in the Chemistry Building will be replaced with more efficient units that are estimated to save $600,000 annually compared to the existing units that need to be replaced. The $7 million project is being funded from General Fund resources and is expected to be completed next fall.
Elevators to be replaced at MLB
The two elevators at the Modern Languages Building will be replaced in a $1.2 million project currently planned. The current units, installed when the building was constructed in 1972, will be replaced with new units with significantly lower operating and maintenance costs. Funding will be provided from General Fund resources, and is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2014.
Hospital to get new ‘open’ MRI
A renovation of approximately 900 square feet in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suite at University Hospital is planned as part of a project that will replace an existing “closed” MRI scanner with a new “open” model that permits easier patient entry and provides increased comfort for patients who fear being in enclosed spaces. The U-M Hospitals and Health Centers are funding the $3.25 million project that is scheduled to be completed next spring.

Jeffrey A. Alexander, Richard Carl Jelinek Professor of Health Management and Policy and professor of health management and policy, School of Public Health, professor of organizational behavior and human resource management, Stephen M. Ross School of Business, and faculty associate, Survey Research Center, Institute of Social Research, effective July 31. He joined the faculty in 1988. Alexander authored more than 255 peer-reviewed journal articles, was editor of Medical Care Research and Review for seven years, and served on the editorial boards of numerous other journals. He served the School of Public Health as acting dean and received the school’s Excellence in Research Award in 2007.
Dr. James R. Baker Jr., Ruth Dow Doan Professor of Biologic Nanotechnology, professor of internal medicine, chief of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, director of the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences, Medical School, and professor of biomedical engineering, CoE, effective Aug. 31. He joined the faculty in 1989. Baker was appointed chief of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 1993. He also served as director of the Center for Biologic Nanotechnology and of the Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences. His research in immunology helped define the basis of several autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Caroline S. Blaum, assistant dean for clinical affairs, associate medical director of the Family Group Practice, professor of internal medicine, and research professor in the Institute of Gerontology, Medical School, effective Aug. 31. She joined the faculty in 1991. She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking research defining the impact of comorbidity on the health and function of older people, especially those with diabetes. Blaum headed the university’s activities as one of the nation’s first pioneer accountable care organizations. She served as associate medical director of M-Care, associate division chief of the Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine, and as assistant dean for medical affairs.
Stephen K. Fisher, professor of pharmacology in the Medical School and research professor in the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute, effective Aug. 31. Fisher joined the faculty in 1985. He is an international expert in the field of inositol lipids, crucial for brain function and a site of action for therapeutic drugs such as lithium. A long-serving contributor to the textbook Basic Neurochemistry, he will serve as a primary editor for the ninth edition. Fisher was a rigorous instructor on the art of seminar presentation, and served on 78 doctoral thesis committees. He received the university’s Research Scientist Recognition Award in 1997.
Sun-Kee Kim, associate professor of cell and developmental biology, Medical School, effective Aug. 31. Kim joined the university as a research associate in 1971. His research resulted in publications and presentations at national and international meetings and symposia, and he led several conference sessions as co-chair at national and international meetings on salivary gland research. He served on research-related committees at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and as research advisor to undergraduate, medical and dental students. He served on departmental and Medical School committees and as the histology course director and sequence coordinator of the first year medical curriculum.
Dr. Melvyn T. Korobkin, professor of radiology, Medical School, effective May 31. Korobkin joined the faculty as professor of radiology in 1989. He is an internationally recognized leader in abdominal radiology and was an outstanding mentor for junior colleagues in the field. Korobkin directed the abdominal radiology division and was the founding radiologist for the Multidisciplinary Endocrine Conference, now a destination program. He published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and served on the editorial boards of the four most important journals in his field. He was chosen as a James Picker Foundation Scholar, a recipient of an NIH Research Career Development Award, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Uroradiology.
Bruce A. Watkins, associate professor of kinesiology, School of Kinesiology, effective June 30. He joined the faculty in 1980. Watkins was a Senior Fulbright Scholar, and in the Division of Kinesiology served as interim director, associate dean for research and scholarly activities, graduate programs chair, and as a member of the executive committee for six two-year terms. Watkins provided quality instruction and set high academic standards for his students, whether he was teaching an undergraduate introductory course, or a graduate sport management and research methods class. He was recognized with the 1993 Teaching Excellence Award in Kinesiolgy.
Paul A. Weinhold, professor of biological chemistry, Medical School, effective June 30. Weinhold joined the faculty in 1965. He is recognized internationally for research in phospholipid metabolism, and his research on the metabolic pathway for phospholipid synthesis contributed significantly to the understanding of the regulation of the enzyme that is deficient in neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. Weinhold participated in the evaluation and modification of the Medical School curriculum and was instrumental in the oversight of its basic science components. He received the Kaiser Permanente Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Medical School in 1994.
