Get tips and healthy food samples at free chef demonstration Wednesday

It’s a fact: eating healthy can help you feel better, have more energy and even handle stress better. It’s also one of the best ways to prevent and control health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and some forms of cancer.

To help the university community learn more about making meals that are quick, delicious and healthy for the entire family, MHealthy is hosting a free chef demonstration at the Michigan Union, Rogel Ballroom, from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday.

Led by U-M executive chef Chris Carr, the “Eat Smarter This Fall” chef demo will include food samples, recipes and healthy eating tips. A variety of dishes will be prepared including:

• Spiced Pumpkin, Lentil and Goat Cheese Salad.

• Chicken Breast Sandwich with Roasted Peppers.

• Apple Brown Betty.

“Some people think ‘eating healthier’ means going on a diet but that’s not true,” says Stacy Witthoff, MHealthy registered dietician. “It means making changes you can live with such as adding more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your meals and cutting back on foods with lots of fat, salt and sugar. Making small changes like this can make a huge difference in how you feel for life.”

The chef demo is free and open to all U-M faculty, staff and students. No registration is required but space is limited. To accommodate those who are unable to attend, the chef demo also will be streamed live on the MHealthy website.

As an added incentive, benefits-eligible faculty and staff who attend the chef demo live at the Michigan Union will be entered into the MHealthy November Grand Prize Drawing and could win one of six prizes valued up to $500 each. Prizes include travel vouchers, exercise and sporting equipment, and gift certificates. Employees are asked to bring their U-M ID to be entered into the drawing.

After the Wednesday chef demo, much of the produce used in the recipes will be available for purchase the next day at the MFarmers’ Market in the Michigan Union Courtyard from 11 a.m-3 p.m.

A partnership between Central Student Government and the University Unions, the market will offer fresh fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers from local farms. The market emphasizes and encourages healthy eating and a campus committed to sustainable efforts and local source benefits.
