Don’t miss: Gifts of Art presents traditional, world and avant-garde jazz performance

Mark Hershberger, leader of Global Jazz Project and jazz performer and composer for more than 40 years, leads his group in a noon-1 p.m. performance Thursday at the University Hospital Courtyard.

Hershberger was mentored and has performed with top local musicians including Harold McKinney, Jimmy Allen, Marcus Belgrave and Ed Sarath. His history also includes backing up artists including STAX Records legends Sam & Dave at various Detroit appearances.

He describes Global Jazz Project’s music as a mix of free and innovative jazz with traditional jazz roots and world music influences. The group is made up of Hershberger on tenor sax, soprano sax and alto sax; Jerry LeDuff on udu, surdo, percussion, ocarinas, ethnic woodwinds, cuica, congas, bongos and berimbau; Bastian Christopher Trimpe on guitar and mandolin; and Damon Warmack on bass. Their upcoming release, “Mother Nature,” is coming out in the fall.

The rain location is the University Hospital Main Lobby, Floor 1. The concert is presented by Gifts of Art, which is sponsored in part by the FRIENDS of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, grants, donations and art sales.
