Retirements
Michael D. Cohen, William D. Hamilton Collegiate Professor of Complex Systems, professor of information, SI, and professor of public policy, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, effective May 31. Cohen joined the faculty in 1973. His studies focused on organizational routines and how they interact with information resources. He has published nearly 50 articles in refereed journals and numerous books, edited volumes and book chapters. His recent research funding has come from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Cohen has held visiting professorships at Stanford University and abroad, and has served in administrative roles in LSA.
Dr. Lee A. Green, professor of family medicine, Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the faculty in 1986. He has been an active family physician as well as a teacher of medical students, residents and graduate students. He is nationally recognized for his work on practice change. Green has served on and chaired numerous evidence-based practice guideline panels, led implementation studies, and devised specialty societies and government panels on quality measurement and implementation. Through his research, and his service as assistant chair for research and associate chair for information management, Green played a significant role in the Department of Family Medicine’s advancement to a position of national academic leadership.
Cary E. Johnson, professor of pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy, and clinical pharmacist, UMH Pharmacy Services, effective Aug. 31. Johnson joined the faculty in 1972. He is a nationally recognized leader in pediatric pharmacy education, clinical practice and research. Two of his antibiotic formulations are used by Doctors Without Borders to treat children with life-threatening diseases in Africa. He developed and served as the course director for pediatric pharmacotherapy for nearly 20 years, and was instrumental in the development of the Pharm.D. Investigations Program. His honors include the College of Pharmacy Teaching Excellence Award and election as a fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Ujjaini Khanderia, clinical associate professor of pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy, and clinical pharmacist, UMH Pharmacy Services, effective July 31. Khanderia joined the faculty in 1982. She has played an instrumental role in curriculum development and has successfully incorporated innovative teaching models into her instruction. Her direct patient care responsibilities included adult internal medicine, endocrinology and the cardiac surgery service. Her clinical activities formed the basis for quality improvement initiatives, and the development and implementation of guidelines to promote the most appropriate and cost effective drug therapy in surgical patients. Her significant contributions to clinical pharmacy and patient care have received regional and national recognition.
Barbara J. Snow, librarian in the Law School library, effective July 18. Snow joined the faculty in 1973. She served as head of circulation from 1977-2007 and was appointed assistant director in 2007. She oversaw the launch of the Law Library’s first online version of its circulation records in 1980, and planned and oversaw the barcoding of all print volumes. Snow has participated extensively in the development of national preservation initiatives among law libraries. She has been a member of the American Association of Law Libraries and the Michigan Association of Law Libraries and served on the Web committee of the Legal Information Preservation Alliance.
Dr. L. Paul Sonda III, clinical assistant professor of radiology, Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the university in 1977. Sonda has been a leader in the Division of Gastrointestinal Radiology. He has refined standard procedures for barium studies, organized an efficient division of labor, and provided outstanding teaching to radiology trainees. He served as an oral board examiner in gastrointestinal radiology for the American Board of Radiology — a high honor as only 25 radiologists are selected. Sonda received the Outstanding Clinician Award from the dean of the Medical School in 2009.
Robert W. Stach, professor of chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences, UM-Flint, effective June 30. Stach joined the faculty in 1987. As director of research, he oversaw the growth of external funding from an average of $30,000 to more than $1.5 million per year. He co-founded the Meeting of Minds Undergraduate Conference, a collaborative effort among the UM-Flint, UM-Dearborn and Oakland University. Stack served as chair of the Department of Chemistry, when the number of majors grew from 40 to more than 100, and Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in chemistry and biochemistry were created. Stach also has been a strong advocate for academic freedom and faculty governance.
Carey Addison Stone III, professor of education and director in the School of Education, effective July 31. Stone joined the faculty in 2000 and served as director of the Graduate Studies in the Educational Studies Program (2004-05) and as chair of the Educational Studies Program (2005-12). His research interests include language and learning disabilities, and the social context of typical and atypical development. He is also engaged in analyses of the reading progress of at-risk children in Reading First classrooms. Stone teaches courses on the theoretical foundations of literacy research and practice, and an advanced seminar on the legacy of Vygotsky in educational theory and research, among others.
Jan Svejnar, Everett E. Berg Professor of Business Administration, professor of business economics, corporate strategy and international business, Stephen M. Ross School of Business, professor of public policy, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, and professor of economics, LSA, effective May 31. He joined the faculty in 1996. Svejnar has been one of the leading scholars working on the economic problems of transitional economies. He is internationally recognized for his leadership of the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education at Charles University, Prague, and for his service as executive director of the William Davidson Institute in the Ross School from 1996-2004.
Nicolas Triantafyllidis, professor of aerospace engineering and professor of mechanical engineering in the CoE, effective July 31. He joined the faculty in 1980. His research focused on stability in solids and structures, structural mechanics and nonlinear continuum mechanics. He developed and taught a number of graduate and undergraduate courses in solid mechanics, and mentored 14 doctorate students who have established successful careers. Triantafyllidis also has collaborated extensively with researchers on both sides of the Atlantic. He was presented with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Warner T. Koiter Medal and the French Academy of Sciences’ Paul Doisteau-Emile Blutet Prize.
Bram van Leer, Arthur B. Modine Professor of Engineering and professor of aerospace engineering, CoE, effective Aug. 31. He joined the faculty in 1986. In a series of papers, he laid out the methodology for creating schemes that combined second-order accuracy and monotonicity, breaking a barrier theorem due to S. K. Godunov. His influence has extended to the teaching of computational fluid dynamics; the two-course graduate sequence he instituted was one of the first of its kind in the country. He received an honorary doctorate from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels and received the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Fluid Dynamics Award for groundbreaking work in computational fluid dynamics.
