Fawwaz T. Ulaby, Emmett Leith Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of electrical engineering and computer science, College of Engineering, has been chosen to receive the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers James H. Mulligan Education Medal for contributions to undergraduate and graduate engineering education through innovative textbooks, dedicated mentoring of students, and inspirational teaching.
Carlos Cesnik, professor of aerospace engineering, College of Engineering, has been elected a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The organization confers this distinction on members who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics and astronautics. Cesnick is graduate program chair in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and head of the Active Aeroelasticity and Structures Research Laboratory.
School of Public Health faculty members Mousumi Banerjee, research professor of biostatistics and adjunct associate professor of biostatistics, and Bhramar Mukherjee, John G. Searle Assistant Professor of Biostatistics and associate professor of biostatistics, have been elected fellows of the American Statistical Association, the nation’s preeminent professional statistical society. The recipients were recognized for outstanding professional contributions to and leadership in the field of statistical science.
Peter Sweatman, director of the U-M Transportation Research Institute and an international leader in the scientific field of heavy-vehicle-infrastructure interaction, has been appointed chair of the board of directors of the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) of America. He has served as vice chair of the ITS America board, which represents all segments of the transportation industry and guides its strategic goals and activities.
Dr. Ralph Lydic, the Bert La Du professor of anesthesiology and co-director of the Center for Sleep Science, U-M Health System, has been chosen to receive the 2012 ASA Excellence in Research Award, the highest award given by the American Society of Anesthesiology. It recognizes Lydic’s more than 30 years of research on the brain mechanisms that regulate states of sleep and anesthesia, breathing and pain.
Wendy Kerschbaum, associate professor of dental hygiene and director of the dental hygiene program at the School of Dentistry, has been named the Educator of the Year by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. She was lauded for forward thinking that led to the dental hygiene program becoming a baccalaureate degree program, for helping to initiate an online degree-completion program, and helping to create a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Program.
