Deitch to chair Board of Regents; Fischer Newman named vice chair
Regent Laurence Deitch will serve as the next chair of the Board of Regents for a one-year term beginning July 1. Regent Andrea Fischer Newman was named vice chair when the appointments were announced June 21 at the board’s monthly meeting.
According to regents bylaws, the chair and vice chair are appointed based on seniority, and the vice chair automatically succeeds to the position of chair. Primary duties of the chair include: setting the annual schedule of meetings, agenda and major topics for presentation or study by the board; monitoring committee agenda planning for coordination and comprehensiveness; acting as spokesperson and convener of the board, when appropriate; presiding over executive session when held without the president; and appointing the chair and members of the ad hoc and standing committees.
If the president is unable to attend a public meeting or must be out of the room during any part of the meeting, the chair will preside. If the chair is unable to perform the duties, the vice chair will assume them.
Renovations planned at Cancer Center
A renovation project is planned at the Comprehensive Cancer Center to support increasing patient volumes. Approximately 6,300 gross square feet of space vacated by departments that moved to the new C.S. Mott Children’s and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospitals will be renovated to expand clinical spaces and improve patient access to educational and support services. The $2 million project is being funded by the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers and is scheduled to be completed next spring.

Retirements
Robert J. Dolan, Stephen M. Ross Professor of Business and professor of marketing in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, effective June 30. He joined the university in 2001 as dean of the School of Business Administration (now Ross School) and served until 2011. Under his leadership, the school pursued academic innovations, particularly relating to action-based learning. The school was twice named as having the Best MBA Program in the country by The Wall Street Journal. Dolan’s research on new product development and pricing policy has impacted academics and practitioners. His teaching materials, distributed by Harvard Business School Publishing, have sold more than 2.5 million copies. He is the author or co-author of eight books and numerous journal articles.
Judith Lynch-Sauer, clinical assistant professor of nursing in the School of Nursing, effective June 30. She joined the faculty in 1970, and focused her scholarly career on the development of the concept of sense of belongingness and a theory of human relatedness which has been regularly cited in psychiatric nursing textbooks. Lynch-Sauer taught graduate and undergraduate psychiatric-mental health nursing courses, lectured in didactic courses, taught in the clinical domain and mentored students at all levels and junior faculty. She also served as director of the School of Nursing’s Office of Student Affairs, worked to develop a new master’s degree curriculum, and served on several committees.
Dr. L. Paul Sonda III, clinical assistant professor of radiology, Medical School, effective June 30. Sonda joined the faculty in 1977. He has been a leader in the Division of Gastrointestinal Radiology. Sonda has refined standard procedures for barium studies, organized a division of labor to enhance throughput, and taught radiology trainees. Sonda served as an oral board examiner in gastrointestinal radiology for the American Board of Radiology. Only 25 radiologists are selected in each subspecialty to administer these examinations each year. In recognition of his service, Sonda received the Outstanding Clinician Award from the dean of the Medical School in 2009.
Robert W. Stach, professor of chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences, UM-Flint, effective June 30. He joined the faculty in 1987. As director of research, Stach oversaw the growth of external funding from an average of $30,000 per year to more than $1.5 million annually. He co-founded the Meeting of Minds Undergraduate Conference — involving UM-Flint, UM-Dearborn and Oakland University — which promotes the publication and dissemination of undergraduate student research. During 14 years as chair of the Department of Chemistry, the department grew from 40 majors to more than 100 and bachelor and master’s degrees in chemistry and biochemistry were created. He also served as a key senior advisor to the chancellor.
