MHealthy summer healthy eating series starts in June

MHealthy will conduct free, 30-minute healthy-eating events for faculty and staff every Wednesday this summer.

Registration now is open for the June 13, 20 and 27 sessions of the “Eat Smarter: Summer Series,” which focus on a range of summer eating topics. Participants can attend in person or online, and may register for one or more events.

“With summer comes busy schedules, vacations and, many times, poor food choices,” says Erica Wald, a program manager and a registered dietician for MHealthy. “But it’s also a prime time for fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy outdoor grilling and delicious and nutritious snacks for long road trips.”

June, July and August sessions will feature each of the following topics:

• “Thrill of the Grill” — How to choose and prepare leaner meats or meat alternatives for grilling and tips for preparing lower fat snack foods and desserts.

• “Seasonal Surprises” — How to find and prepare fruits and vegetables that are available during summer months.

• “Summer Sipping” — How to serve up enticing, lower-sugar summer drinks, and craft delicious non-alcohol drink alternatives.

• “Travel; Don’t Unravel” — How to eat healthier on vacations and summer road trips.

Each event is taught by an MHealthy nutrition expert. Live events will be at various campus locations at 5:15 p.m. Attendees can ask questions and will receive healthy recipes. Online webcasts take place during the lunch hour and are geared towards employees who want to hold a virtual “Lunch and Learn” event in their office.

The “Eat Smarter: Summer Series” is at the Michigan Union and continues every Wednesday through Aug. 29. It is free to everyone; however, registration is required due to space constraints.
