The Board of Regents approved the following items at its May 17 meeting.
New Survival Flight hangar planned
The Board of Regents approved a 20-year lease in a new building being constructed by the Livingston County Emergency Medical Services department at the Livingston County Spencer J. Hardy Airport. The move from the currently leased space at the airport will improve the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers Survival Flight service operations. The Hospitals and Health Centers will fund the approximately $2.6 million leasehold improvements project scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2014.
Fire alarm work planned at University Hospital, Taubman Health Care Center
The fire alarm control panels at University Hospital and the A. Alfred Taubman Health Care Center will be upgraded to connect the systems in the two buildings and improve central monitoring abilities. The $3 million project is being funded from Hospitals and Health Centers’ resources and is scheduled to be completed next summer.

Retirements
Yvonne Abdoo, assistant professor of nursing in the School of Nursing, effective May 31. Abdoo joined the School of Nursing in 1988. Her scholarly work focused on systems research, including the delivery of high quality, efficient and cost-effective health services. The underlying theme in her research is bridging technology with the end user to enhance patient safety and unite clinical practice, research and management. Abdoo has published and consulted on systems and database design and more, has taught graduate courses, been involved in using technology for distance learning, is an advocate for implementing technology that benefits users, and has strived to incorporate the latest technology in her instruction.
Joanne F. Carlisle, professor of education, School of Education, effective May 31. Carlisle joined the faculty in 2000. From 2001-03, she was co-director of the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement. Her research focused on the relationship between language and literacy development, with a special interest in children for whom language and literacy acquisition present unusual challenges. More recently, her research projects have focused on the effective teaching of reading in the early elementary years. She taught courses in language development, reading acquisition, and differentiating instruction in reading and was responsible for the evaluation of the Reading First program in Michigan.
Todd M. Endelman, William Haber Professor of Modern Jewish History, professor of history and professor of Judaic studies, LSA, effective May 31. Endelman joined the faculty in 1985. A pre-eminent scholar in the social history of Jews in Western Europe and Anglo-Jewish history, he is the author of “The Jews of Georgian England, 1714-1830: Tradition and Change in a Liberal Society (1979)” among other books. Endelman served as director of the Jean and Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies from 1987-95, 2002-05 and 2010. Under his leadership, a master’s degree program was added along with and a $20 million endowment to establish the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies, the largest gift ever given to a Jewish studies program.
Claes Fornell, Donald C. Cook Distinguished Professor of Business Administration and professor of marketing in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, effective May 31. Fornell joined the faculty in 1980. He is called one of the world’s leading experts on statistical marketing and customer satisfaction measurement. Fornell is responsible for the American Customer Satisfaction Index, a national indicator of the economy, and similar indices overseas. He has been a Nobel Prize nominator in economics sciences in marketing and is in constant demand to present his work at national and international forums. He was named an honorary university professor by Renmin University and Tianjin University, and received an honorary doctorate of economics from the Stockholm School of Economics.
Margret H. Hoft, professor of mathematics, College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, U-M-Dearborn, effective April 30. Hoft joined the faculty in 1973. Her research led to publication in Algebra Universalis and the Canadian Journal of Mathematics, among others. She also introduced technology and computer algebra systems into undergraduate instruction. She served as the Midwest regional director of the Interactive Mathematics Text Project and with the Committee on Undergraduate Programs in Mathematics of the Mathematical Association of America. Hoft served two terms as department chair from 1998-2004. Under her leadership, the department launched a master’s degree program in applied and computational mathematics, and established the Mathematics Learning Center and the Center for Mathematics Education.
Shuen-fu Lin, professor of Chinese languages and literatures, LSA, effective May 31. Lin joined U-M in 1973. He is known as one of the world’s leading scholars of classical Chinese poetry, especially that of the Tang and Sung dynasties. In 1978, he published “The Transformation of the Chinese Lyrical Tradition: Chiang K’uei and Southern Sung Tz ‘u Poetry.” In 1986 he co-edited “The Vitality of the Lyric Voice: Shi Poetry from the Late Han to the T’ang.” He taught a wide range of courses and provided leadership through his service as director of the Center for Chinese Studies and chair and interim chair of the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures.
Guy A. Meadows, professor of physical oceanography and academic director of the M-Stem Academy in the College of Engineering, effective May 31. Meadows joined U-M in 1977. He has been involved in field and analytical studies of the Great Lakes environment and holds two patents on oceanographic research devices. Meadows served as director of the Ocean Engineering Laboratory, director of the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory, and academic director of the Michigan-Science Technology Engineering Math Academy. He has served as a technical advisor to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other organizations, and received the Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award in 2010.
Ronald P. Morash, professor of mathematics, College of Arts, Sciences and Letters (CASL), UM-Dearborn, effective April 30. He joined the faculty in 1972. Morash’s research focused on lattice theory, nonstandard analysis, mathematics history and mathematics pedagogy. He authored the textbook “Bridge to Abstract Mathematics: Mathematical Proof and Structures,” which remains the text for Math 200, a bridge course he created. He was heavily involved in an innovative and alternative teaching approach to calculus based on individualized instruction. Morash served as chair of the Department of Mathematics for five three-year terms and was associate dean of CASL from 2001-05. He played an instrumental role in establishing the Mathematics Learning Center, including serving as director.
Robert M. Owen, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of marine geochemistry, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, LSA, and professor of the environment, Program in the Environment, LSA, and School of Natural Resources and Environment, effective May 31. Owen joined U-M in 1975. His research interests range from marine geochemistry to environmental geochemistry. He participated in more than 20 oceanographic research cruises and several submersible operations in the Great Lakes. Owen has served as director of the Program in the Environment, director of the Camp Davis Rocky Mountain Field Station, and as president of the International Marine Minerals Society. He has received the Amoco Foundation’s Outstanding Teaching Award and four LSA Excellence in Education Awards.
Theodosia S. Robertson, associate professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences, UM-Flint, effective May 31. Robertson joined the faculty in 1986. She has published extensively on Polish literature and culture and the Holocaust. Her students praise her enthusiasm, knowledge and innovative approaches to teaching. She developed the initial Wyatt Exploration Program, served on the College of Arts and Sciences executive committee, and was the senior adviser to the chancellor. Robertson has served as president of the Dom Polski Cultural Center of Flint and as president of the International Institute of Flint Board of Directors. Her honors include UM-Flint’s Excellence in Teaching Award, the Dr. Matthew Hilton Watson Distinguished Professor Award, and the UM-Flint Distinguished Service Award.
Dennis G. Severance, Accenture Professor of Computer and Information Systems and professor of computer and information systems in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, effective May 31. He joined the university in 1978. Severance’s work in the area of how information systems impact the work of high-level executives made important contributions to the field of information technology and particularly to technology systems. He was at the forefront of research on information systems, considering the potential of information technology in global organizations, senior management attitudes toward strategic change, database design and information storage. This work laid the foundation for the explosive growth of corporate information technology.
R. Shantaram, associate professor of computer science in the College of Arts and Sciences, UM-Flint, effective May 31. He joined UM-Flint in 1971, and over 40-plus years taught all of the introductory and upper level mathematics and computer science courses, in addition to developing and teaching new courses. His knowledge was invaluable to the Master’s in Computer Science in Information Systems Program. He assisted in hosting the annual Math Field Day, a program for local high school students to compete in a variety of mathematics problem-solving challenges. He founded the annual High School Programming Contest and served as faculty advisor to the student chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery.
Robert L. Smith, Altarum/ ERIM Russell D. O’Neal Professor of Engineering and professor of industrial and operations engineering, CoE, effective May 31. He joined the university in 1980. Smith’s research focuses on the modeling, analysis and optimization of dynamic systems over time. He has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has advised 28 doctoral students. Smith received the Michigan Student Assembly’s Outstanding Teacher Award, the CoE Research Excellence Award, the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering’s Award for Outstanding Accomplishments, and numerous Research Excellence Awards from the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering.
John D. Speth, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, professor of anthropology, and curator of North American Archaeology, Museum of Anthropology, LSA, effective May 31. He joined the university in 1976. Speth’s research focused on past and present hunters and gatherers, the evolution of human diet, hunting strategies, modern human origins, Neanderthals, Paleoindians and the Plains-Pueblo interaction the forager-farmer interaction in the late prehistoric, and more. Speth received numerous honors, including four Horace H. Rackham Faculty Recognition Awards and four LSA Excellence in Education Awards. He was director of the Museum of Anthropology, and served on the executive committee of the Society for American Archaeology.
Karl E. Weick, Rensis Likert Distinguished University Professor of Organizational Behavior and Psychology, professor of organizational behavior in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, and professor of psychology, LSA, effective May 31. Weick joined the faculty in 1988. He received the Irwin Award for Distinguished Scholarly Contributions from the Academy of Management and the Best Article of the Year Award from the Academy of Management Review. His book “The Social Psychology of Organizing” was named one of the nine best business books ever written by Inc. Magazine and was translated into several languages. He co-authored “Managing the Unexpected: Assuring High Performance in an Age of Complexity,” which received the Best Book of the Year Award from HR.Com.
Roland J. Wiley, professor of music (musicology) in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, effective May 31. He joined the faculty in 1974. His book “Tchaikovsky: A Life and Works” was named one of the best books of 2009 by The Washington Post. He served as director of graduate studies and was interim department chair. Wiley was a respected, effective doctoral advisor. His awards include an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities from Harvard University, two American Council of Learned Societies awards, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in the Humanities, a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship and Rackham’s John H. D’ Arms Faculty Award for Distinguished Graduate Mentoring in the Humanities.
Reg Arthur Williams, professor of nursing in the School of Nursing and professor of psychiatry in the Medical School, effective May 31. Williams joined the faculty in 1980. He has been deeply committed to the school’s research and teaching mission, and has served in several administrative roles, including interim associate dean for research. Williams’ scholarly career has focused on interventions to reduce stress and symptoms of depression. He was the principal investigator for five research grants funded by the Department of Defense and the TriService Nursing Research Program, to develop an intervention to assist military members in managing stressful conditions. He was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing.
Regents approve faculty promotions
The Board of Regents approved recommendations for new appointments and promotions for regular associate and full professor ranks, with tenure and/or promotion of faculty on the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses.
