“I had a burning need to explore my gay identity in fiction,” said author and alumnus Edmund White in his keynote talk at the 2002 Avery Hopwood Awards Ceremony. His writing career took off while an undergraduate at U-M when he won a Hopwood award in 1962 for his play, “The Blue Boy in Black.” The play later was  produced off-Broadway. — The University Record
