Student robbed in Arb, suspect in jail
A 26-year-old Saginaw man has been charged in connection with a March 19 unarmed robbery in the Arboretum. A student had reported that she was punched in the face around 4:40 p.m. as she walked in the Arb and her cell phone and cash were stolen by the suspect. U-M police developed a suspect, who initially was arrested in Saginaw as a parole absconder. On April 19 he was arraigned at the Washtenaw County jail on one count of unarmed robbery and awaits his preliminary hearing on April 19.
Nine burglaries reported in March
Nine burglaries were reported to the Department of Public Safety in March; three incidents involved attempts to break-in and no property was stolen.
Residents in three Northwood Apartments on Stone Drive reported incidents on March 2. Two apartments had been entered overnight through the unlocked, sliding glass doors. Backpacks were taken from each apartment, though one backpack was found nearby missing cash. A third resident had reported her screen door was damaged overnight with pry marks. On April 3 two additional incidents were reported in the 1500 block of McIntyre. In all of these incidents, the door security bars had not been utilized. The Kirkland and Ellis Cafe in Hutchins Hall was broken into twice within three weeks. On March 19 staff reported that a cash register had been pried open and food items taken. Again on April 2, they reported $900 in food items had been removed. There are no suspects.
Over spring break (Feb. 24-March 4), a video game player, several controllers and video games reportedly were taken from a West Quad resident’s locked room. There are no suspects.
A resident of Baits I reported that his laptop was taken from his room when he left the door open and his room unattended between 8-9:30 p.m. March 25. There are no suspects.
On March 16 a guest’s wallet reportedly was taken from a locked room at the Ronald McDonald House. The wallet, without its contents, was found the next day in a University Hospital restroom. The case remains under investigation.
The additional attempted break-ins were reported March 19 at the North Ingalls Building and March 22 at the East Liberty office of the Center for the Education of Women.
Visitor charged with disorderly conduct
A 48-year-old man was arraigned March 23 on charges of disorderly conduct and indecent exposure following several incidents the previous night during a visit to the University Hospital Emergency Department. Staff reported that the man repeatedly had inappropriately touched a staff person and exposed himself to others. He originally was taken into custody for sexual assault. He remains in jail on $250 cash bond.
Former patient reports sexual assaults during treatment
On March 28 a former patient told police she had been inappropriately touched on many occasions during therapy treatments from early 2010 through August 2011. She previously had not reported the incidents to authorities. The investigation is continuing.
Student assaulted on St. Patrick’s night
A student told police March 18 that he had been assaulted at the School of Public Health just before midnight by unknown males. He said he had been studying on the first floor, when several people knocked on the locked entrance door. He opened the door thinking they were trying to access the building. Once inside, one of the males began striking the victim with a belt buckle. The group fled on foot. The victim did not seek medical attention.
Vehicles stolen, damaged
A vehicle and a moped were reported stolen from campus parking areas in March and a third vehicle was damaged during an apparent theft attempt. There are no suspects in any of the incidents.
On March 27 a 1997 Honda reportedly was stolen from the State Street Commuter Lot. The driver reported locking the door when he left the vehicle.
A moped reportedly was stolen from the Thompson Street parking structure sometime between 5 p.m. March 12 and 1 p.m. March 14. It was found April 9 on neighboring private property with minor scratches.
On March 29 a Northwood Apartments resident reported that he had heard glass breaking around 11:30 p.m. in a parking lot in the 1700 block of Cram Circle. When he looked out, he observed a large, black vehicle quickly leaving the parking space next to his car. Upon further inspection, he found a window on his 1995 Acura had been shattered.
