Advisory committee named for School of Dentistry dean search

Provost Phil Hanlon has named a search advisory committee for the dean of the School of Dentistry.

Dr. Jacques Nör, Donald A. Kerr Collegiate Professor of Dentistry and professor of dentistry, Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics, School of Dentistry; professor of otolaryngology, Medical School; and professor of biomedical engineering, College of Engineering, will chair the committee that has been charged with conducting a broad search and presenting a slate of recommended candidates by winter semester 2013.

Other members of the committee, who are from the School of Dentistry unless otherwise indicated, are:

❙ Dr. Erika Benavides, clinical assistant professor of dentistry, Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine

❙ Dr. Carol Bradford, chair and professor of otolaryngology, Department of Otolaryngology, Medical School

❙ Dr. Richard Scott Conley, Robert W. Browne Professor of Dentistry and clinical associate professor of dentistry, Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry

❙ Dr. Joanne Dawley, School of Dentistry alumna

❙ Dr. Ronald Heys, associate professor of dentistry, Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics

❙ Jan Hu, Samuel D. Harris Collegiate Professor of Dentistry, professor of dentistry, Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences; and director of the Oral Health Science Ph.D. program

❙ Dr. Yvonne Kapila, professor of dentistry, Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, and director of the Global Oral Health Initiatives program

❙ Emily Kennedy, third-year dental student, president of the Dental Student Council

❙ Charlotte Mistretta, William R. Mann Professor of Dentistry, professor of dentistry, Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences; and associate dean for research

❙ Dr. Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch, clinical professor of dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Hospital Dentistry; and associate dean for academic affairs

❙ Martin Philbert, dean and professor of toxicology, School of Public Health

❙ Cheryl Quiney, dental care manager, Dental Care Services

❙ Dr. Robert Schneider, master’s student in endodontics, and adjunct clinical lecturer in dentistry, Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics

In a January email to faculty and staff at the school, Hanlon wrote that current Dean Peter Polverini will step down Aug. 31, 2013, after 10 years of service.

“During his tenure Dean Polverini has been a champion for the scientific foundation of dental practice and education, leading the school to achieve an impressive record of research funding,” Hanlon wrote. “He has been an invaluable colleague and critical partner in collaborative activities of the U-M Health Science Schools. Because of his dedication to the advancement of the school as a leader in clinical dental education, he has continually encouraged excellence, creativity, and innovation. The School of Dentistry has thrived under Dean Polverini’s leadership and over the past 10 years has consistently ranked in the top five for receipt of research awards from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.”
