James W. Brown, professor of mathematics, College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, UM-Dearborn, effective Dec. 31, 2011. Brown joined the faculty in 1962, left in 1966 and returned in 1968. He received a National Science Foundation Research Grant in 1969, the UM-Dearborn Distinguished Teaching Award in 1976, and the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities in 1983. With R.V. Churchill, he co-authored two textbooks, “Complex Variables and Applications,” and “Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems,” which have been translated into Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish and Arabic.
David J. Jude, research scientist in the School of Natural Resources and Environment, effective Jan.18. He joined U-M in 1973 and became known for his research work on the Great Lakes and connecting tributaries, including research on the Muskegon River. His work has expanded understanding of fish population dynamics and provided vital clues to understanding entire lifecycles. He is a well-known scientist to fishery ecologists nationally and internationally. Jude has taught courses on great lakes aquatic field methods and great lakes aquatic ecosystems. His outgoing personality has engaged students who have gone on to careers in fisheries biology.
John D. Kalbfleisch, professor of biostatistics in the School of Public Health and professor of statistics, LSA, effective Jan. 31. Kalbfleisch joined the faculty in 2002. He co-authored the widely referenced book “The Statistical Analysis of Failure Time Data.” He served as chair of the Department of Biostatistics, and later as director of the Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center. He has held visiting appointments at overseas universities including University College London has received awards including the Gold Medal from the Statistical Society of Canada and the Excellence in Research Award from SPH.
Mary L. Trepanier-Street, professor of education in the School of Education, UM-Dearborn, effective December 31, 2011. She joined the university in 1977. Trepanier-Street devoted much of her career to the preparation of early childhood educators. Her research focus included gender equity and early childhood education for children, and she authored or co-authored nearly 50 articles and book chapters. She served as associate dean of the School of Education, director of student teaching, and director of the Early Childhood Education Center, raising its prominence statewide. She received the UM-Dearborn Distinguished Faculty Service Award and was named Child Advocate of the Year by Child’s Hope.
