Burglaries reported at three apartments
Residents in two Northwood Community apartments reported March 2 that backpacks had been taken from the first floor of their apartments. The incidents occurred in Northwood V on Stone Road. One resident reported that she had been sleeping upstairs and found her backpack missing when she entered the living room around 9 a.m. The backpack was recovered outside nearby, but cash was missing from it. In a second incident, a resident reported that he had been sleeping on his living room couch when his backpack was taken between about 5:30-6:30 a.m. In the two incidents, entry apparently was made through the unlocked sliding glass door. Nearby, a third resident reported that the screen door had been found open and prymarks were evident, but no entry had been made and no property was taken. The investigation is continuing.
Arsons still under investigation
University police continue to investigate two incidents of small arsons on Feb. 13. In each case, a small amount of paper was found smoldering in a lower-level student supply closet. Water was used to extinguish any embers and there was no damage. The Department of Public Safety issued Crime Alert #12-2 for the incidents. There have not been any reports of additional incidents.
Staff struck by patient
A patient reportedly struck a staff person several times before the suspect was restrained by the victim’s co-workers and Hospital Security personnel Feb. 23. The victim was treated for minor injuries. The investigation has been submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office for review.
Charges denied in assault
The county prosecutor has denied authorizing charges against a former staff person in connection with a reported sexual assault in early February. A campus visitor reported that she met the man on Feb. 7 in response to a hiring advertisement for a lab employee. After they met to review her resume, he reportedly fondled her inappropriately in a parking lot at the North Campus Research Complex. The visitor was not injured. The man subsequently was terminated from his job.
Patient assaulted by patient
A 20-year-old University Hospital patient reported Feb. 23 that she had been inappropriately touched by another patient that day. The 58-year-old suspect reportedly had touched the patient on the outside of her clothing and made lewd expressions toward her while they were in the hallway.
Patient reports assault from 2008
A 53-year-old patient told her doctor February 23 that she had been sexually assaulted by an employee during a medical procedure at University Hospital more than three years ago. She indicated that she had not previously reported the incident from Dec. 31, 2008. The investigation is pending.
Traffic stop finds stolen vehicle
A 31-year-old man, who was arrested Feb. 9 during a traffic stop, will face new charges. A university police officer pulled the man over when he reportedly was erratically driving a truck on Glen Avenue around 3 p.m. The truck also had a defective light. During the traffic stop, it was determined that the man was driving with a suspended license and had outstanding arrest warrants. He was interviewed, processed and taken to jail. When the vehicle owner arrived at DPS, he reported that the man did not have permission to drive the truck. Reportedly, the suspect had taken the vehicle keys from the vehicle owner’s fiancé while they were visiting the University Hospital Emergency Department. The Washtenaw County prosecutor has authorized two felony charges.
Two students arrested for burglary
Two students were arrested Feb. 17 in connection with breaking into a locked conference room in the Law Quadrangle. The two were processed and released pending warrant authorization. University police were notified by residents of the building that a wooden door had just been broken and the suspects were found in the room when police arrived. The investigation has been submitted to the county prosecutor’s office for review.
Visitor found sleeping in empty building
A 46-year-old man was found sleeping Feb. 17 in an unoccupied university house in the 400 block of South Division. He was arrested on an outstanding warrant from another police agency. The prosecutor has authorized a warrant for illegal entry.
Jacket taken from office
A jacket reportedly was taken from a locked office sometime between 2 p.m. Feb. 14 and 8:30 a.m. Feb. 15. Entry apparently was made by an unknown person reaching over the office wall and removing the jacket.
