Old school: U-M in History

Original pumas

Created in 1940 by sculptor Carleton Angell and photographed circa 1940-50, the pumas flanking the entrance to the Museum of Natural History were cast in terrazzo, a mixture of stone chips in cement. Weathering caused them to crack and crumble, and bronze casts of the pumas replaced the originals in 2007. The original cats are in storage.
