Anne Curzan, associate professor of English, linguistics and education, was appointed as the university’s faculty athletics representative to the National Collegiate Athletic Association and Big Ten conference.
The three-year appointment, effective July 1, was made by President Mary Sue Coleman.

NCAA bylaws call for each member institution to designate a faculty member as a liaison between the institution and the athletics department, and also as a representative of the institution in conference and NCAA affairs.
“Professor Curzan is an exceptional scholar and university citizen for this important role,” Coleman says. “She is deeply committed to the integrity of intercollegiate athletics, the welfare of student-athletes, and the balance between the university’s educational mission and athletics.”
An Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and recipient of the Henry Russel Award, Curzan also serves as director of the English Department Writing Program, LSA, and co-director of the Joint Ph.D. Program in English and Education.
Coleman adds, “As an undergraduate at Yale, Professor Curzan was a varsity athlete, an experience that provides a unique appreciation for the academic and scheduling demands of student-athletes.”
She holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a doctorate from U-M.
Curzan succeeds Professor of Education Percy Bates, who served as the university’s faculty athletics representative since 1990.
