Don’t miss: History of local drug, alcohol use examined in exhibit

The history of alcohol and drugs in the culture and industry of Washtenaw County is the focus of the new exhibit “Bad Habits: Drinks, Drags, and Drugs in Washtenaw County History.”

The exhibit is presented from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and by appointment through April 29 at The Museum on Main Street, 500 N. Main. The museum is at the corner of Beakes, East Kingsley and Main Streets. The exhibit also is open by appointment, by calling 734-662-9092.

Included in the exhibit are medicine bottles from historic local pharmacies, memorabilia from local bars and recipe books with popular cure-alls. Historical photographs, posters, news articles and documents also will be on display.

Exhibit organizers are inviting the public attending the exhibit to share their own memories of bar culture in the county. Attendees will have an opportunity to write down their memories and place them on a provided board, where there is a map and photos of local bars, past and present. Attendees also can bring their own photos or email them along with written memories to [email protected].

The exhibit is a collaboration involving the LSA Research Theme Semester Hooked: Addiction, Society, Culture, the Substance Abuse Research Center and the Washtenaw County Historical Society-Museum on Main Street.

Admission is free and groups are welcome.
