Piersante to lead DPS during search for new chief

Deputy Police Chief Joe Piersante on Nov. 30 was appointed interim university police chief, after the unexpected resignation of Chief Greg O’Dell.

O’Dell told university officials Nov. 29 that he was resigning, effective Nov. 30, and returning to his previous position as police chief at Eastern Michigan University. The EMU Department of Public Safety has been led by an interim chief since August when O’Dell accepted the U-M position.

“This was Greg’s decision to return to EMU,” said Hank Baier, associate vice president for facilities and operations, who informed U-M Department of Public Safety staff of the changes.

“I have known Greg for many years, and I am truly sorry to say he came to the decision that U-M was not the right fit for him. Greg will continue to work and live in our community and contribute to law enforcement. He will always be on the same team and we wish him all the best,” Baier said.
