It has been five years in the making.

U-M soon will open the doors to its new, state-of-the-art C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, a space that’s surrounded by nature, designed for privacy and efficiency, and where those who face complex medical challenges will look to the university for improved health and hope.

To offer the community a glimpse at the area’s newest resource for children’s and women’s health, a public open house is planned from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 6 at the new hospitals, 1540 E. Hospital Drive. There is no charge to attend.

Families are invited to tour the new facilities and take part in a day filled with free activities for all ages, including:

• Live music

• Games and giveaways

• Ecology station

• Scavenger hunt

• Appearance by Ronald McDonald

• Demonstrations from hospital staff

• Live radio broadcasts by W4 Country 102.9 and WNIC Fresh 100.3

• “Therapaws” animal therapy dogs

• Interactive tours of the new hospital and the children’s emergency department

Visitors are asked to begin their visit at the Biomedical Science Research Building (109 Zina Pitcher Place) where buses will shuttle them to and from the new hospitals. Free parking will be available.

Attendees are welcome to tour the hospitals, which include a 12-story inpatient tower and 9-story clinic tower, home to 25 pediatric clinics. It will feature, among other things, a dedicated pediatric emergency department and women’s Birth Center, which has 50 private, large birth and recovery rooms. Both will be open to public tours.

“Over the past 10 years, thousands of individuals have been involved in the planning, designing and building of this extraordinary facility,” says Pat Warner, executive director of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. “We’re delighted to welcome the community to tour the beautiful new space.”

The 1.1 million square-foot facility will provide a new home to U-M’s world-renown programs, including the pediatric liver transplant program, its Level I pediatric trauma, the craniofacial anomalies program, the congenital heart program, high-risk pregnancy services and female pelvic surgery.

Located adjacent to the current children’s and women’s hospital and connected to the rest of the medical campus through a convenient walkway, the building allows physicians and patients to navigate easily between U-M Health System facilities.

The event is sponsored by Health Alliance Plan, Barton Malow and Terumo.
