In concert with the UM-Flint Theatre presentation of the play “The Women of Lockerbie,” the Theatre Department is collecting clothing for charity.
The clothing drive 11,000 Pieces of Clothing: The Women of Lockerbie Clothing Drive at UM-Flint is inspired by the women of Lockerbie, Scotland. The women washed and returned 11,000 pieces of clothing to Pan Am flight 103 victims’ families. This followed the December 1988 incident in which an on-board bomb exploded causing the plane to crash in Lockerbie, killing all 259 on board.
The play is presented at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28, 29 and Nov. 5 and 11; and 2 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 13. People are encouraged to donate new and gently used clothing with the goal of collecting 11,000 pieces. Donations can be dropped off at the Theatre Box Office. Additional boxes will be in the theatre lobby during the performances.
Directed by Assistant Professor Janet Haley, “The Women of Lockerbie” takes place seven years after the disaster. Madeline and Bill Livingston leave their New Jersey suburb and make the journey to Lockerbie in search of closure, and any fragment of their son’s memory they can find. As Madeline combs the countryside, Bill meets the women of the village, who seek clothing recovered from the wreckage so they may wash the articles and return them to victims’ families. Haley says the play has a message of healing through engagement.
After the Nov. 5 presentation, Haley will moderate a discussion featuring UM-Flint Assistant Professor of Social Work Denise Dedman, who will discuss the grieving process. Playwright Deborah Brevoort will lead a talk back after the Nov. 13 performance. Both events are in the UM-Flint Theatre.
