No-cost flu shot clinics set for university employees

The best way to prevent influenza is to receive a seasonal flu shot, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are many ways for U-M faculty, staff and students to receive that protection on campus this year.

For faculty and staff on Central, North and South campuses, MHealthy, in collaboration with Michigan Visiting Care, is conducting walk-in flu shot clinics at the following locations:

• Thursday: 11 a.m.-2 p.m., North Campus Duderstadt connector hall

• Oct. 6: 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Michigan Union Wolverine ABC

For those who work at the U-M Health System, the influenza vaccination policy implemented last year still applies. This policy requires all employees in patient care areas to be vaccinated against the flu or to wear a protective mask during any patient interaction during flu season. All information about the requirements, and the many different ways UMHS community members can receive the vaccine, is available at www.med.umich.edu/u/flu. (Note: This link must be accessed by a U-M computer, and some links on the resulting page must be accessed via a UMHS computer.)

The Health System provides its faculty and staff, medical students and volunteers at UMHS, as well as U-M students from health sciences schools who are doing clinical rotation during flu season, a vaccine without charge if they present their MCard ID.

At the MHealthy clinics, campus employees covered under a U-M health insurance plan will not pay an out-of-pocket fee if their health insurance card is presented; the cost will be charged directly to the U-M insurance plan. Employees not covered under an accepted insurance plan can receive a flu shot at the discounted rate of $25 per person, payable by cash, check or credit card.

For campus employees unable to attend one of the flu shot clinics offered by MHealthy, University Health Service will hold by-appointment flu shot clinics Friday through Nov. 18. Appointments can be made online at www.uhs.umich.edu/fluvaccination. Michigan Visiting Care will offer walk-in clinics at selected U-M outpatient care centers and at locations in the community. Schedules for these are available at www.umvn.org/Immunizations.asp.
