Shedden appointed director of CSCAR

Professor Kerby Shedden has been appointed director of the Center for Statistical Research and Consultation (CSCAR), a service and research unit that provides statistical services to faculty, primary researchers, graduate students, and staff at U-M.

The appointment is effective Sept. 1.

Shedden takes over the reins from Professor Edward Rothman, director of CSCAR since its founding in 1991. Rothman, professor of statistics and adjunct professor of economics, LSA, will remain affiliated with the center.

Shedden is associate professor of statistics in LSA and associate professor of biostatistics in the School of Public Health. A graduate of U-M in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics, and of the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1999 with a doctorate in statistics, Shedden joined the U-M faculty in 2005. He is a leading researcher in biostatistics and also won LSA’s Excellence in Education Award in 2010.

“Under Ed Rothman’s leadership, CSCAR has won acclaim across campus and beyond for its contributions to the vitality of our research community, expanding the application of statistics across a broad spectrum of disciplines from the sciences to the humanities,” says Stephen Forrest, vice president of research. “I am confident that Kerby Shedden will continue the tradition of excellence that is the hallmark of CSCAR.”

A unit of the Office of the Vice President of Research, CSCAR offers a wide range of statistical services, including proposal presentation and study design, dataset consulting, choice of statistical methods, use of statistical software, interpretation and presentation of results, and collaborative research. It also holds a series of seminars and workshops.
