Infrastructure improvements planned for North Hall
An infrastructure improvement project planned for North Hall will update the building’s fire alarm and detection systems, improve building egress, provide an accessible entrance and unisex restroom, update the mechanical systems, and add storm windows for energy conservation. The $1.6 million project is being funded from university investment proceeds, and is scheduled to be completed next winter.
UM-Flint School of Management to relocate
The regents approved a $5.328 million project that will enable the UM-Flint School of Management to relocate from the William S. White Building to leased space at the Riverfront Building in Flint. The project will allow the school to achieve its long-term strategic goals while also allowing for the expansions of the School of Education and Human Services, School of Health Professions and Studies, and Genesee Early College program that also are housed in the William S. White Building. UM-Flint resources will fund the project, which is scheduled to be completed next winter.
Property purchase approved
The regents approved the university’s purchase of an apartment building adjacent to the Institute for Social Research. The property at 417 S. Division St. will be purchased for the negotiated price of $698,364, with the purchase from university investment proceeds.

Retirements
Steven A. Goldstein, Henry Ruppenthal Family Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Bioengineering and professor of orthopedic surgery in the Medical School, professor of biomedical engineering and professor of mechanical engineering, CoE, and research professor in the Institute of Gerontology, effective June 30, 2011. Goldstein joined the faculty in 1981. Within the Medical School, he headed the Bioengineering Interdisciplinary Program and received the Kappa Delta Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Research-the highest award given to orthopaedic investigators. In 2005, he received the H.R. Lissner Medal for career achievement in biomedical engineering from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
Barbara MacAdam, A.M.L.S, associate university librarian for public services and librarian, University Library, retired from active faculty status June 30. She joined the faculty in 1979. As head of the Shapiro Undergraduate Library (1987-99) and head of reference and instruction at the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library (1999-2008), MacAdam oversaw a major expansion of the undergraduate library, renovation of the graduate library, and the launch of the university’s first institutional web portal in 1994. Her awards include the Association of College and Research Library’s Miriam Dudley Instructional Librarian Award (1996), the University’s Librarian Achievement Award (2004), and the University Library’s Diversity Award (1996 and 2011).
Dr. Riley Rees, professor of surgery in the Medical School, retired from active faculty status June 30. He joined the faculty in 1988 and served as chief of the plastic surgery section at the Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Medical Center from 1988-2011 and director of wound care at the U-M Health System from 1997-2008. Rees is recognized nationally as a leader in the fields of plastic surgery, wound healing and surgical oncology. He has published more than 96 articles, 18 book chapters and two books. He provided a unique clinical expertise within the Section of Plastic Surgery for the treatment and reconstruction of head and neck cancer problems, melanoma cancer problems, and skin and soft tissue cancer problems.
