This month in history (98 years ago)

Gerald R. Ford was born as Leslie Lynch King Jr. in Omaha, Neb., to Leslie and Dorothy King on July 14, 1913. Fleeing an abusive relationship, Dorothy King and her son left Omaha and relocated to Grand Rapids. After divorcing Leslie King, in 1917 she married Grand Rapids businessman Gerald R. Ford Sr., and King Jr. was renamed Gerald R. Ford Jr. In 1931-35 Ford attended U-M and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in economics. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1941. In 1973, during his 13th term serving in the U.S. Congress, he was appointed vice president following the resignation of Spiro Agnew. After Richard Nixon resigned during the Watergate scandal, Ford on Aug. 9, 1974 became the 38th president of the United States and served until Jan. 20, 1977.
