Suspect in jail for sexual assault at North Quad
A 25-year-old man remains in jail on $125,000 bond on charges of sexual assault on campus and interfering with a witness. The man, who is homeless and not affiliated with the university, reportedly assaulted an 18-year-old female campus visitor around 10 p.m. May 27 in a restroom at the North Quad Residential and Academic Complex. The two, along with two other acquaintances, had illegally entered the building earlier in the evening and had been drinking alcohol in a NQ lounge. After the assault occurred, the female left the building allegedly to take a phone call and called police. Responding officers located the three men still in the building. The other two men were arrested for illegal entry and possible possession of marijuana. The assault suspect was arraigned May 30 on charges of criminal sexual conduct third degree, resisting and obstructing a police officer, illegal entry and furnishing alcohol to a minor. A charge of witness interfering was added June 10 after it was alleged that he worked with his sister to intimidate witnesses. His pretrial conference is scheduled for July 21.
Two students assaulted near Law Quad
Two students told university police May 21 that they each had been punched repeatedly in the face by two unknown males after exchanging verbal taunts. The two students said they were walking along South University Avenue about 1:50 a.m. when the verbal bantering began. One of the students was taken to the U-M Emergency Department by ambulance for treatment of a possible broken nose. The other student was treated at the scene by medical personnel. The investigation has been closed due to no leads.
Student reports belongings taken during move-out
A resident of Alice Lloyd Hall told police that she had left some personal belongings in her room May 1, but they were gone when she returned the next day. The student said she had granted permission to an acquaintance to use the room overnight and when she returned, the door was ajar. Clothing, jewelry, art supplies and other personal items were reported missing. The investigation has been closed due to no leads.
Attempted break-in discovered at Law School addition
Staff reported to police that an unknown person had attempted to gain entry to the Law School addition construction area through a temporary door between 4:30 p.m. April 30 and 6 a.m. May 2. An ax handle was found at the scene, but there were no signs entry had been gained and no property was missing.
Moped taken from North Quad rack
A student’s moped was stolen while it was locked to a bike rack near State and Washington streets between 10:30 p.m. May 13 and 1 p.m. May 14, the student told police. There are no suspects.
Car taken from campus lot recovered in Illinois
A campus visitor reported that he parked his car in the State Street Commuter Lot at 5 p.m. May 12, then boarded a MegaBus for Wisconsin. While out-of-state, he received a call May 14 from an Illinois State Police officer who told him that his 1994 Honda Accord had been recovered in Springfield, Ill. A subject was in custody in Springfield in connection with the vehicle theft. The vehicle ignition had been punched out and a rear window had been broken.
