Ilitch to chair Board of Regents; Deitch named vice chair
Regent Denise Ilitch will serve as the next chair of the Board of Regents for a one-year term beginning July 1. Regent Laurence Deitch was named vice chair when the appointments were announced June 16 at the board’s monthly meeting.
According to regents bylaws, the chair and vice chair are appointed based on seniority, and the vice chair automatically succeeds to the position of chair. Primary duties of the chair include: setting the annual schedule of meetings, agenda and major topics for presentation or study by the board; monitoring committee agenda planning for coordination and comprehensiveness; acting as spokesperson and convener of the board, when appropriate; presiding over executive session when held without the president; and appointing the chair and members of the ad hoc and standing committees.
If the president is unable to attend a public meeting or must be out of the room during any part of the meeting, the chair will preside. If the chair is unable to perform the duties, the vice chair will assume them.
Changes in food service at University Hospital planned
The patient food kitchen at University Hospital will be renovated to allow the hospital to implement an on-demand “room service” method that will allow patients to have more control over their environment. During construction, food service operations for the hospital will be transferred to the North Campus Research Complex. The $8.5 million renovation of approximately 13,000 gross square feet on level B2 will be funded from Hospitals and Health Centers’ and is scheduled to be completed in the winter of 2013.
ISR addition project receives final OK
The Board of Regents gave the final approval for the Institute for Social Research (ISR) addition project, which will construct an approximately 44,700-gross-square-foot, four-level addition to the existing ISR building. The addition will create office and research spaces, collaborative meeting spaces and secure storage, and renovate approximately 7,200 gross square feet of the existing building where it will connect to the addition. The $23 million project is being funded by an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 grant from the National Institutes of Health, the Office of the Provost, and ISR. Construction is expected to be completed in the spring of 2013.
Lab renovations planned at Med Sci II
A renovation of approximately 5,200 gross square feet on the sixth floor of the Medical Science Unit II building will create state-of-the-art research facilities for the Integrative Physiology Department. The Medical School will fund the $2 million project, which is scheduled to be completed next spring.

Retirements
Richard Alfred, associate professor of education in the School of Education, effective May 31. Alfred joined the faculty in 1981. He is the founding director of the Center for Community College Development and the author of more than 150 publications on the topics of organizational strategy, governance, institutional effectiveness, planning and assessment, and change management in colleges and universities. He also is a nationally and internationally recognized writer, researcher, speaker and consultant on the topic of community college education.
Jonathan Bulkley, Peter M. Wege Endowed Professor of Sustainable Systems and professor of resources policy in the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) and professor of civil and environmental engineering, CoE, effective June 30. Bulkley joined the faculty in 1968. He was director of the National Pollution Prevention Center for Higher Education at U-M and in 1998 was appointed co-director of the Center for Sustainable Systems. He is known for his research to help improve the planning, evaluation, and management of natural resources and is a nationally and internationally recognized expert on storm water, combined sewer overflows and water collections systems.
Benedick Fraass, Allen S. Lichter M.D. Professor of Radiation Oncology and professor of radiation oncology in the Medical School, effective April 27. He joined U-M in 1984. Fraass was a founding member and director of the Division of Radiation Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology, and is recognized as one of the leading radiation oncology physicists in the world. His contributions to the field have propelled the university’s reputation as a leader in radiation oncology research and patient care. Fraass has held leadership positions with the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.
Carolyn Gillespie, professor of theatre in the College of Arts and Sciences, UM-Flint, effective June 30. Gillespie joined the UM-Flint faculty in 1987. She led the way in shaping the acting and directing program and directed 54 productions at UM-Flint, Oakland University, Michigan State University, the University of Dallas and the Michigan Shakespeare Festival. Gillespie is the recipient of professional awards including the Kennedy Center Gold Medallion for Excellence in Theatre Education. She chaired the Department of Theatre and Dance in 1990-93 and 1995-2000, and developed the Speech Teacher Certification Program in 1997.
John Griffith, Andrew Pattullo Professor of Hospital Administration and professor of health management and policy, SPH, effective May 31. Griffith joined the faculty in 1960. His research focuses on evidence-based management systems and practices that promote excellence in the healthcare industry and improve the quality and efficiency of patient care. He is the author of the most widely used textbook in healthcare administration, “The Well-Managed Health Care Organization,” named Book of the Year by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. Griffith has served as chair of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and received the SPH Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009.
Dr. David Kuhl, professor of radiology, Medical School, effective June 30. Kuhl joined the faculty in 1986. His research focused on the development of neurochemical and metabolic processes within the living brain, which enabled drug development targeted to the earliest stages of degenerative brain disease. Kuhl has authored 235 peer reviewed publications and 374 published abstracts. He has received awards including the Japan Prize from the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan (2009), the Outstanding Researcher Award from the Radiological Society of North America (1996), and the Benedict Cassen Prize for research leading to a major advance in nuclear medicine science from the National Institutes of Health (1996).
Valerie E. Lee, professor of education in the School of Education and faculty associate, Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, effective June 30. She joined the faculty in 1986. Her research focuses largely on public policy with respect to educational equity, and on identifying characteristics of schools that make them both excellent and equitable. Recently she broadened her focus to study schools in Brazil and sub-Saharan Africa. Her research has been published in books, journal articles and reports. She received the Rackham Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award in 2008 and was elected to the National Academy of Education in 2010.
Gary Pace, associate professor of biology in the College of Arts and Sciences, UM-Flint, effective June 30. Pace joined the faculty in 1969. He has been instrumental in the development of the biology curriculum, and served as the department’s advisor for the Teaching Certificate Program and Honors Scholar Program. He was awarded the UM-Flint Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 1993 and received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards of State Universities in 1994. The local community benefited from his commitment to the Flint River Watershed Coalition and the Flint Environmental Action Team.
Judy Rosenthal, professor of anthropology, College of Arts and Sciences, UM-Flint, effective June 30. She joined the faculty in 1993. A nationally and internationally recognized scholar of Togolese and Ghanaian spirit possession cultures, Rosenthal is the author of “Possession, Ecstasy, and Law in Ewe Voodoo,” an ethnography based on her research in West Africa. Rosenthal was coordinator of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program from 2000-04, chaired the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice from 2001-02, was a driving force in the creation of the Master of Arts in Social Science program, and has received the Lucinda Hinsdale Stone Senior Faculty Award.
Dr. Thomas Schwenk, George A. Dean M.D. Chair of Family Medicine, professor of family medicine, chair of the Department of Family Medicine and professor of medical education in the Medical School, effective June 30. Schwenk joined the faculty in 1984. He is co-editor of the textbook “Primary Care Psychiatry” and a founding member of the National Advisory Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Generalist Faculty Scholar Program, from 1992-2008. Schwenk served on the board of directors of the American Board of Family Medicine and as its vice president from 2004-05. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in 2002.
Karen Wixson, professor of education in the School of Education, effective June 30. She joined the faculty in 1980. Wixson has published widely in the areas of literacy curriculum, instruction, and assessment in books and journals. She is an author of the Scott Foresman reading program and co-author of a popular text on the assessment and instruction of reading and writing problems. Wixson served as dean of the School of Education from 2000-05. She co-directed the federally funded Michigan English Language Arts Framework standards project, and served as co-director and principal investigator in the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement.
