New water main and storm relief sewer for North Campus planned
A $2.2 million project is planned that will replace the aging water main under Beal Avenue on North Campus, as well as install a new storm relief sewer to relieve surface flooding in the area. The project will be funded by Utility resources and is scheduled to be completed next spring.
Two renovations planned at University Hospital for imaging systems
A renovation of approximately 1,400 gross square feet at University Hospital will install a new computed tomography angiography system for interventional procedures, allowing examination of key blood vessels in the body with more detail than magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound. The $4.8 million project, funded by U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, will be complete this fall.
A renovation of approximately 1,800 gross square feet will replace an existing computed tomography simulator used to facilitate treatment plans for Radiation Oncology patients requiring radiation therapy with a new magnetic resonance imaging system with improved imaging and functionality. The $4.9 million will be funded by University Hospital and U-M Health System resources and will be completed in the winter of 2012.
Engineering Programs Building renamed after Gorguze family
The College of Engineering’s Engineering Programs Building has been renamed as the Gorguze Family Laboratory. The change recognizes a $5 million gift Vincent and Gloria Gorguze made in support of an addition to the building, which will allow a variety of curricular and co-curricular activities to enhance hands-on, project-oriented learning in a collaborative setting.

Retirements
Elaine Clark, professor of history in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, UM-Dearborn, effective April 30. Clark joined the UM-Dearborn faculty in 1980. Her area of scholarship focused on the social-legal aspects of local life in medieval England. More recently, she developed an interest in the field of 19th-century English religious history. She received the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1985 and 1999 and also was honored with a teaching award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards in 1987.
Robert L. Culver, professor of music (education) in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, effective May 31. He joined the U-M faculty in 1977, and with prominent members of the Michigan chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA), helped craft the program Services for Strings adopted by all 13 state colleges and universities with music training programs. He was president-elect, president, and past president of ASTA from 1986-92. In 2010 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Michigan Chapter of ASTA.
Igor Dolgachev, professor of mathematics in LSA, effective May 31. Dolgachev joined the U-M faculty in 1978. He has made fundamental contributions to many areas in the field, including the theory of algebraic surfaces and their automorphisms, the theory of singularities and vector bundles, and geometric invariant theory. In 1981 he introduced a class of algebraic surfaces now called Dolgachev surfaces that have become important in topology. A prolific author, he also sponsored popular seminars in algebraic geometry and in physics and geometry.
Joan Durrance, Margaret Mann Collegiate Professor of Information and professor of information in the School of Information, effective May 31. Durrance joined the U-M faculty in 1979. Her wide-ranging research and teaching interests included the study of social and cognitive aspects of how individuals seek, give and use information in different contexts. In 1997 she was honored by the American Library Association with its R.R. Bowker-Isadore Mudge Award and in 2005 received the ALISE Award for Professional Contribution to Library and Information Science.
Erik Fredricksen, Claribel Baird Halstead Professor and professor of theatre and drama in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, effective May 31. He first joined the U-M faculty in 1981-85, and returned to U-M in 1990; he served as chair of the Department of Theatre and Drama from 1990-2005. An accomplished actor and combat choreographer on Broadway and in other prominent venues, Fredricksen is a founding member and past president of the Society of American Fight Directors and the Nordic Society of Theatrical Combat. He helped plan the Walgreen Drama Center and in 2010 he was awarded the Claribel Baird Halstead Professorship.
Ken Ito, professor of Japanese language and literature, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and director of the Center for Japanese Studies International Institute, effective May 31. Ito joined the U-M faculty as an instructor in 1984. A leading scholar of modem Japanese literature, his monograph “An Age of Melodrama: Family, Gender, and Social Hierarchy in the Turn-of-the-Century Japanese Novel” (2008) received the John W. Hall Prize from the Association for Asian Studies. He served as director of undergraduate studies (2002-04, 2007-09) in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and as director of the Center for Japanese Studies (2008-11).
Carol Karlsen, professor of history and women’s studies, LSA, effective May 31. Karlsen joined the faculty in 1985. She specialized in early American social and cultural history, American women’s history, and the history of witchcraft. Her book “The Devil in the Shape of a Woman: Witchcraft in Colonial New England” continues to be assigned in classrooms across the nation. She was a co-editor the “Pages from History” series published by Oxford University Press, and has held distinguished fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation.
Stephen Kesler, professor of geological sciences, LSA, effective May 31. He joined U-M in 1977. Kesler’s research focused on the formation of economically important mineral deposits. He was a pioneer in constraining the relationship between Mississippi Valley-type deposits and tectonic events that triggered fluid migration. He co-authored papers with more than 13 faculty colleagues and wrote several books, served as president of the Society of Economic Geologists in 1998, and in 2007 received the R.A.F. Penrose Gold Medal, the highest award of the Society of Economic Geologists.
Ann Kruszewski, assistant professor of nursing, School of Nursing, effective May 31. She joined the faculty in 1976. Kruszewksi has been involved in many curriculum development projects for the School of Nursing. Her 1990 textbook, “Introduction to Nursing: Concepts, Issues, and Opportunities,” was used in foundational nursing courses both nationally and internationally. She served as coordinator of the Fundamentals of Nursing program and pioneered the development of distance education in the school. In 2005 she received the Edna Doyle Teacher of the Year award.
Joanne Leonard, Diane M. Kirkpatrick and Griselda Pollock Distinguished University Professor of Art and Women’s Studies, professor of art in the School of Art & Design, and professor of women’s studies in LSA, effective May 31. Leonard joined the U-M faculty in 1978. She organized the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Disabilities in 1995 and developed the Photoactive Feminists: Visiting Artist Series. She is the recipient of the Sarah Goddard Power Award (1997), the James T. Neubacher Award (1995), and the John H. D’Arms Faculty Award for Distinguished Graduate Mentoring in the Humanities (2002).
Kenji Niki, librarian in the University Library, effective April 29. He joined the U-M faculty as senior associate librarian in 1999. He was promoted to librarian in 2006 and served as interim co-director of the Asia Library from 2003-08. As curator of the Japanese collection and coordinator for acquisition operations, Niki made significant contributions to the Asia Library and the Japanese language collection. He published articles, has given presentations at professional conferences and co-authored the National Union List of Current Japanese Serials in North America.
Joanne Pohl, professor of nursing in the School of Nursing, effective May 31. She joined the U-M faculty in 1992, and is widely recognized for her expertise in primary care and health outcomes, cost of care in nurse managed health centers, and health informatics in safety net practices. Pohl was coordinator of the adult nurse practitioner program from 1992-2001 and served as president of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. She received the Achievement in Research Award from the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties in 2006, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties.
Arnold Sameroff, professor of psychology, LSA, and research professor in the Center for Human Growth and Development, effective May 31. Sameroff joined the U-M faculty as professor in 1992. He proposed a new theoretical model for conceptualizing how biological and environmental risk factors operate together as causes of developmental impairments in childhood. He is widely regarded as one of the founders of an important new field of behavioral science, developmental psychopathology. He has received the G. Stanley Hall Award for Distinguished Contribution to Developmental Psychology and the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Society for Research in Child Development.
F. Brian Talbot, David B. Hermelin Professor of Business Administration and professor of operations management in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, effective May 31. He joined the U-M faculty in 1977, and has made significant contributions to the field of manufacturing education and research. He has consulted with major manufacturing firms, and has served as associate editor of Management Science, on the editorial review board of the Journal of Operations Management and the board of the Operations Management Association. Talbot served as associate dean from 1998-2002, and as interim director of the Graham Institute from 2005-09.
Michael Udow, professor of music (percussion) in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, effective May 31. Udow joined the U-M faculty in 1982. A respected performer, he created one of the most comprehensive percussion programs in the country. Udow brought the world of percussion repertory to his students, including symphonic music, opera, solo pieces, and chamber works in both western and world traditions. His program was founded on his experiences studying with the great teachers of percussion. Udow’s career at Michigan was crowned during the 2009-10 season when he performed his new concerto for solo percussion and symphony band, “Moon Shadows.”
Edwin Vedejs, Moses Gomberg Collegiate Professor of Chemistry and professor of chemistry, LSA, effective May 31. Vedejs joined the U-M faculty in 1999. He is internationally known in the field of synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry, widely recognized as a leader in the development of synthetic approaches to cytotoxic nitrogen-containing natural products. Vedejs has been recognized with the Paul Walden Medal, the Grand Medal of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and the H. C. Brown Award for Creative Research in Synthetic Methods from the American Chemical Society.
Martha Vicinus, Eliza M. Mosher Distinguished University Professor and professor of English and women’s studies, LSA, effective May 31. She joined the U-M faculty in 1981. Vicinus is a pioneer of 19th-century feminist studies, labor history and lesbian history. Her monographs include “Independent Women: Work and Community for Single Women, 1850- 1920.” In 2008 she co-edited the book “Originality, Imitation, and Plagiarism: Teaching Writing in the Digital Age.” She served as director of the Women’s Studies Program (1982-85), chair of the Department of English Language and Literature (1994-98), and director of the Gayle Morris Sweetland Writing Center (2003-08).
Lynn Walter, professor of geological sciences in LSA, effective May 31. Walter joined the U-M faculty in 1989. Her research in aqueous geochemistry of sedimentary systems had applications to hydrocarbon and groundwater pollution and resources, climate change, and human impacts on forested watersheds. She received a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1987 and was elected a Fellow of the Geochemical Society in 2005. In 2006 she received the Rackham Distinguished Graduate Faculty Mentor Award. Walter was editor of both the Geological Society of America Bulletin and Chemical Geology.
