Women’s tennis

Freshman women play tennis against sophomores in 1910 at Palmer Field. Tennis and basketball were the most popular sports for women at the turn of the 20th century. The formation of the Women’s Athletic Association at U-M in 1905 helped promote the continuing growth of women sports. It wasn’t until the 1970s that women’s varsity teams were established at U-M.

The 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual and secular leader of Tibet, told an audience of 9,000 attending the fourth Raoul Wallenberg Lecture in Crisler Arena that the goal of humanity as it faces the 21st century is “to build a happier world.” He said universities must shoulder the responsibility of developing good hearts as well as able brains. “Human affection makes for constructive use of knowledge,” he said. The Dalai Lama returned to Crisler Arena in April 2008 to deliver the Wege Lecture on Sustainability. — The University Record
