Renovations planned at University Hospital
The medical procedures unit on the second level of University Hospital will be expanded by approximately 4,000 gross square feet in a project that will create additional prep/recovery bays, procedure rooms and storage space, and expand the reception and waiting room. The $6 million project will be funded from U-M Hospitals and Health Centers’ resources and is scheduled to be completed next spring.

Retirements
Dr. Leo McAfee, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science in CoE, effective Dec. 31, 2010. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1966 from Prairie View A&M University, and Master of Science in Engineering and doctoral degrees from U-M in 1967 and 1970, respectively. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1969 as the first African-American professor hired by CoE. His research focus on numerical and circuit modeling of integrated circuits, networks for automated semiconductor manufacturing and computer network devices directly led to the adoption of the SEC Message Services (SMS) by SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials, Inc.) in 1989.
Dr. Samuel Mukasa, Erin J. Essene Collegiate Professor of Geological Sciences and professor of geological sciences in LSA, effective Dec. 31, 2010. He received his Bachelor of Science in 1977 from the University of New Hampshire, his Master of Science in 1980 from The Ohio State University and his doctorate in 1984 from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He joined the U-M faculty in 1989. His research focused on the origin and evolution of the Earth’s mantle, and he has traveled the world for research, including Antarctica, Bulgaria, Italy and Zimbabwe. He served on numerous scientific panels, and lectured nationally and internationally to promote diversity in higher education.
John Witter, professor of forestry in the School of Natural Resources and Environment, effective Feb. 28. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1965 and 1967, respectively, and his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1971. He joined the U-M faculty in 1972. He is known for his research on population dynamics and impacts of lepidopterous defoliators, and for his extensive studies on the effects of multiple disturbances in urban and rural forests. He has chaired and served on numerous doctoral and master’s degree thesis committees, and also worked with multiple agencies to make public research results on forestry and insects.
Charlotte Wolfe, senior associate librarian, University Library, effective Dec. 31, 2010. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Vanderbilt in 1958 and her Master of Arts in Library Science from U-M in 1960. She joined the University Library in 1960. Her most notable contribution is her dedication to music cataloging and bibliographic excellence, and her efforts in helping to lead the library into the digital age. Among her many contributions, she chaired the Cataloging Policy Council and throughout her career catalogued the Music Library’s notable Stellfeld Music Collection. Her contributions to drafting the DCRM-Early Printed Music Cataloging Rules are recognized by colleagues worldwide.
