In preparation for the Board of Regents meeting scheduled for this week in Detroit, U-M is highlighting its work in the state’s largest city with a website that showcases many ongoing initiatives.
While the regents, elected statewide by Michigan voters, typically meet on one of the three U-M campuses, their next meeting will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Detroit’s Westin Book Cadillac Hotel.
“Detroit is our state’s most important city, and the University of Michigan is committed to its vitality and influence,” President Mary Sue Coleman says in a message posted on the site. “The university’s engagement in Detroit complements our partnerships throughout the nation and the world.”
The website highlights Detroit-related efforts in a variety of areas, including arts and culture, community action and service, economic development, health and safety, instructional services and outreach, and sustainability and the environment.
Many of the university’s Detroit-related programs are based at its Detroit Center, a 10,500-square-foot facility with space for offices, classes, meetings, exhibitions, lectures and collaborative work. The center also serves as a home base for students and faculty working on projects in the city.
In 2010 regents highlighted the university’s ties to the western side of the state when they conducted one of their monthly meetings in Grand Rapids.
Public comments on regents’ agenda items will be taken prior to their consideration. Comments on nonagenda items will follow the regular business agenda.
