Faculty to discuss water research opportunities

U-M faculty members involved in water research are invited to a Sustainable Waters Initiative Research Opportunities Meeting to learn about, and discuss, research needs and funding opportunities related to water.

The meeting will take place from 4-6 p.m. March 18 in the Michigan League Hussey Room.

“Freshwater Systems is one of three priority research themes for University of Michigan, and the Sustainable Waters Initiative is part of a universitywide initiative to leverage our multidisciplinary research strengths and institutional capabilities in this important area,” says Graham Institute Director Don Scavia, who will moderate a panel discussion about funding opportunities at the event. “There are extraordinary opportunities available for interdisciplinary, solutions-focused research related to water, and the March 18 meeting promises to be a valuable catalyst for such activity.”

Before the event, the Sustainable Waters Initiative Faculty Team requests that colleagues indicate their primary research interests from among the following subjects: Ecology; Hydrology/Hydrodynamics; Great Lakes; Chemical Exposure/Effects; Human Health Impacts; Treatment Technology Sensors/Observing Systems; Policy Analysis; Social Science; Watershed Dynamics; and Other.

Presenters at the meeting include:

• John Austin, director, Great Lakes New Economy Initiative and nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution

• Allen Burton, director, Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research

• Paul Freedman, director, LimnoTech Inc.

• Jon Kinsey, director, Research Relations, College of Engineering
