University staff members are an essential component of making Michigan a world-class institution. The U-M Service Awards Program celebrates this fact by recognizing and honoring those with career milestones.
“Michigan is a special place, which is one reason so many talented staff members build satisfying careers here. In turn, by contributing decades of time and talents, our staff members play a major role in making this a wonderful place to learn, work and grow,” says Laurita Thomas, associate vice president for human resources. “On behalf of the entire university community, University Human Resources is pleased to honor all staff members who have made an enduring career commitment to the university.”
In 2010 about 1,300 staff members celebrated reaching milestones of 10 years of service or more.
61 years of service
James W. Craven, book conservator in the Conservation Lab at the Bentley Historical Library
A true Ann Arbor native, Craven was born at St. Joseph Hospital in 1931. He graduated from Ann Arbor High School, now the new North Quad, in 1949. Soon after graduation, Craven followed in his father’s footsteps and began his career with an apprenticeship at the U-M Binding Department.
“My father was a bookbinder for the university for 40 years,” Craven says.
After serving honorably in the Korean War as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, Craven returned to the university to complete his apprenticeship. In 1957 he became a journeyman in the Bindery Department. In 1964 he became supervisor of the department. In 1974 he was recruited by Dr. Robert M. Warner to lead the conservation lab for the Bentley Historical Library, William L. Clements Library, Special Collections Library and Law Library Rare Books Division.
“Every project that comes in is unique,” Craven says. “Besides working with some terrific people, I’m working with unique items. Which I’ll never see again and never saw before.”
Craven has traveled to China and Ireland to learn and share techniques with other conservators. He has also taught 60 students (and counting) in individual study programs. This includes his Bentley colleague of 35 years, Ann Flowers. He also has periodically taught classes at Hollander’s.
Widowed in 1980, Craven remarried and his blended family has seven children and nine grandchildren. When he’s not puzzling out how to restore rare books and other valuable items, Craven enjoys spending time with his wife and raising his dog, a 1-1/2-year-old golden retriever named Buddy Bounder.
“I have been fortunate to work with so many skilled and knowledgeable people. For that I am grateful,” Craven says. “It’s that variety and the unique nature of the items that have made my work so interesting. I plan to work until I drop or they pay me enough to retire.”
