U-M United Way co-chairs Paul Courant, university librarian and dean of libraries, and Douglas Strong, CEO of U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, called upon university faculty and staff last fall to donate toward the most aggressive campaign goal to date — $1.1 million.
While pledges and donations still are being tallied, it is estimated that U-M has raised $1,202,710 — a 4 percent increase from last year’s campaign amount. This year’s total is a campaign giving record.
“We set an aggressive campaign goal, hoping that the university community would step up in these difficult times. I am pleased and proud to recognize the generosity of our colleagues,” Courant says.
Friendly competition among units was key in the academic affairs area, as offices worked to increase their participation rates. In the competition among the wide array of offices and programs that report to the Office of the Provost, the Detroit Center took top honors. The College of Pharmacy won a similar competition among the schools and colleges.
Each of the winning units received a plaque. In addition, the Office of the Provost recognizes the winners of these annual friendly competitions by displaying a plaque that lists the honorees for each year.
“I am proud to co-lead this campus effort, but even more proud to be part of a university that gives generously to organizations that help people in need,” Strong says.
Donors were entered in weekly drawings for tickets to University Musical Society performances and U-M basketball games.
Winners were from the following units: Center for Reproductive Medicine, Department of Sociology, Department of Pathology, Office of University Development, Radiation Oncology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Exhibit Museum of Natural History, U-M Health System Risk Management and U-M Hospitals and Health Centers’ Medical Center Information Technology.
