ABC News anchor and reporter Carole Simpson spoke at U-M as part of a Reflections on Martin Luther King Jr. and Equal Rights program. The U-M alumnus was one of 65 black undergraduate students at U-M in 1960. Simpson recalled that the house mother of her residence hall had referred to Simpson and the two other black women in her building as “her negresses.” Simpson said living in the South after graduation meant having to sit on the second floor of movie theaters and not seeing people of color on television or in magazines. “But Dr. Martin Luther King, and the courageous black and white people who risked life and limb to join in his struggle, changed America,” she said.  — The University Record
