Nominations sought for staff diversity award

Nominations now are being accepted for the third annual Distinguished Diversity Leaders Award. Cosponsored by the Office of the Provost and University Human Resources, the award recognizes individual staff members and teams that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in supporting diversity at the university.

“From the days of the Michigan Mandate in the late 1980s until today, we have moved forward to make diversity an integral part of the university’s mission. Contributions from many exemplary staff members help bring our commitment to diversity to life,” says Lester Monts, senior vice provost for academic affairs. “This award is one way we can honor those who live a commitment to diversity and strive to sustain a community that is diverse, participatory and inclusive.”

The Distinguished Diversity Leaders Award recognizes individual staff members and teams for their accomplishments and provides a monetary reward — $1,000 for individuals, $2,500 for teams — to be used toward professional development activities. Staff members on all campuses and in the U-M Health System are eligible.

“It is important that we remember the lessons that we have learned on our journey to making this university a more welcoming and inclusive place. One way we do this is by recognizing staff for their exceptional efforts towards diversity. By sharing their stories, we shape our culture and emphasize that diversity is among our core values,” says Laurita Thomas, associate vice president for Human Resources.

Staff members are described as a crucial link by Anthony Walesby, associate vice provost and senior director of the Office of Institutional Equity. “Staff members play a vital role in carrying out the university’s rich tradition of creating and implementing innovative and exciting programs that benefit everyone on campus. If you know someone, or some team, who truly makes a difference, please visit the website and make a nomination for recognition as a Distinguished Diversity Leader.”
