Regents praise Coleman’s performance
Regent Andrew Richner shared highlights of President Mary Sue Coleman’s annual review by the Personnel, Compensation and Governance Committee. Richner said Coleman had an outstanding year, and outlined her many accomplishments including keeping tuition rates low, increasing the university’s endowment, opening the first U-M residence hall in more than 40 years, recruiting new faculty and renovating Michigan Stadium. The board approved a 3-percent raise for the president.
Regents read statement supporting MSA president
The Board of Regents entered an official statement into the record in support of Michigan Student Assembly President Christopher Armstrong, who has been targeted by an individual because of his sexual orientation.
Regent Julia Donovan Darlow, who noted the regents also made a comment of support for Armstrong in September, said she was proud of how the university community came together because of the incident.
“As the elected governing body of the University of Michigan, we want to express our unequivocal support for the way the university has responded to this unfortunate situation,” the statement reads. “Looking ahead, we will remain ever vigilant to unacceptable displays of intolerance.”

Budget, scope revised for Crisler Arena renovation
The regents approved increasing the scope and budget and gave final approval for Crisler Arena renovation. The addition of seating replacement in the upper bowl will increase the project budget $3 million to $23 million. The project now will provide new seating in both the lower and upper bowls, relocated and widened aisles with handrails, and new seating meeting the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The project also will update the arena’s infrastructure, including a new roof and upgrades to the electrical and life safety systems. The project is being funded by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and is scheduled to be completed in the winter of 2012.
New patient/visitor parking planned at Simpson Circle Parking Structure
Approximately 470 staff parking spaces within the Simpson Circle Parking Structure will be converted to parking for patients and visitors to the new C. S. Mott Children’s and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospitals. The project includes entrance and exit improvements, painting, new lighting, signage and guardrails, and a pedestrian bridge connecting the structure to the hospitals. The $3.15 million project is being funded from the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers resources and Parking resources and is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2011.
