This week in history (40 years ago)During an auto strike, the group Students in Support of the Autoworkers presented eight demands to the Board of Regents at its regular meeting. The items included U-M financial aid to striking workers and their families. Another group, The Child Care Action Group of Women’s Liberation, asked for free 24-hour client-controlled child care centers for all university employees, students and Ann Arbor residents. The demands were accompanied by jeering and raucous behavior, and Regent Lawrence Lindemer said some students demonstrated an “expertise in arrogance.” Regents voted to reject the free child care center due to lack of funds. President Robben Fleming said he was exploring how to get loans to students whose parents were striking autoworkers. — The University Record Have a campus memory to share?
